Journal ArticleDOI
Interactive and experiential design in smart textile products and applications
TL;DR: The integration of smart functionality into clothing and other textile products will radically change the culture surrounding these products, fundamentally altering people’s relationships with them and the way they use them.
Journal ArticleDOI
The brain’s response to pleasant touch: an EEG investigation of tactile caressing
Harsimrat Singh,Markus Bauer,Wojtek Chowanski,Yi Sui,Douglas Atkinson,Sharon Baurley,Martin E. Fry,Joe Evans,Nadia Bianchi-Berthouze +8 more
TL;DR: A dissociation of the sensory and affective aspects of touch in the somatosensory system is suggested and may provide features that may be used for single trial decoding of affective mental states from simple electroencephalographic measurements.
Proceedings ArticleDOI
From codes to patterns: designing interactive decoration for tableware
Rupert Meese,Shakir Ali,Emily-Clare Thorne,Steve Benford,Anthony Quinn,Richard Mortier,Boriana Koleva,Tony P. Pridmore,Sharon Baurley +8 more
TL;DR: An iterative collaboration with ceramic designers and a restaurant to refine a recognition technology to work reliably on ceramics, produce a pattern book of designs, and prototype sets of tableware and a mobile app to enhance a dining experience are charted.
Proceedings ArticleDOI
Tactile perceptions of digital textiles: a design research approach
Douglas Atkinson,Pawel M. Orzechowski,Bruna Petreca,Nadia Bianchi-Berthouze,Penelope Watkins,Sharon Baurley,Stefano Padilla,Mike J. Chantler +7 more
TL;DR: A new perspective from which the production of multi-touch interactive video representations of the tactile qualities of materials is considered is offered, and methods to animate and bring these properties alive using design methods are developed.
Journal ArticleDOI
Mechanical, chemical, biological: Moving towards closed-loop bio-based recycling in a circular economy of sustainable textiles
Miriam Ribul,Alexandra Lanot,Chiara Tommencioni Pisapia,Phil Purnell,Simon J. McQueen-Mason,Sharon Baurley +5 more
TL;DR: In this article, a review of existing methods in mechanical and chemical textile recycling processes in closed-loop textile recycling of all fiber types, as well as bio-based processes that demonstrate open-loop textiles recycling is presented.
