Increased penetration of wind and solar PV system in Distributed Generation (DG) and isolated micro grid environment necessitates the use of maximum power point tracking method for wind and solar PV resources. Considering the change in environmental conditions and non-linearity, a variety of publications reporting various MPPT algorithms for solar and wind energy systems are put forward in recent times. But the review reports on common MPPT techniques used for solar and wind applications for hybrid power generation have not yet been reported. Hence, in this paper, conventional techniques and artificial intelligent techniques found extensively used in the power generation platform are peerly reviewed and compared. Historical MPPT methods like Perturb & Observe (P&O) / Hill Climbing, Incremental Conductance (INC), Fuzzy and Neural Network methods benchmarked in MPPT province are comprehensively compared in a common platform. In addition to the common existing techniques, recent swarm intelligence and bio-inspired techniques in solar PV and sensor less adaptive techniques in wind MPPT are also been reviewed provided for quality assessment. Finally an economic analysis is arrived for MPPT methods based on (i) Capacity utilization factor (ii) Cost (iii) Energy Savings (iv) payback period (v) Income generated and (vi) stability.

Design and overview of maximum power point tracking techniques in wind and solar photovoltaic systems: A review

Different types of techniques have been used for tracking the MPPT of PV system such as perturb and observe and incremental conductance, etc. The incremental conductance MPPT tracking techniques is complex but more efficient than P&O of PV system under specified atmospheric conditions. Therefore, the aim of this work is to present comparison between P&O and INC maximum power point tracking techniques. This paper presents the implementation and comparison of performances with respect to output parameters for P&O and INC MPPT algorithms. The comparison shows INC technique is more efficient and offers a fast tracking speed for the MPPT of a PV array. The modeling of the system is executed with MATLAB/SIMULINK software.

Implementation and Comparative Analysis of P&O and INC MPPT Method for PV System

This paper describes an energy-efficient means to achieve on-chip dc-dc conversion for digital CMOS circuits. The approach uses balanced voltage islands running at fractions of the off-chip supply voltage. Charge discarded by one domain is recycled to supply energy for another. When the domains are ideally balanced, all the energy dissipated by electrons in dropping to lower potentials is used for active computation. We describe the design and measurement of a prototype system in a 0.18 μm CMOS process that provides active on-chip voltage regulation and controlled dc-dc conversion with this technique.

Implicit DC-DC downconversion through charge-recycling

This paper focuses on and analysis and design of current starved voltage controlled ring oscillator. The analysis includes effect of delay time, phase noise, layout area, technology etc. on the frequency of oscillation at various power supplies and control voltages. The simulation results shows that the circuit has higher tuning range and low power consumption suitable for various application domains. Added benefit of this VCO is to maintain a constant amplitude level and oscillation. It is also proved here that the frequency of oscillation is inverse of the supply voltage and therefore consuming less power.

Analysis and design of current starved ring VCO

This paper presents a new technique to improve frequency performance of CMOS ring oscillator. It is based on the addition of MOS transistor to boost switching speed of the oscillator delay cell. The method can be used for simple and differential oscillator and offers a simple way to implement frequency tuning without introduction of any additional phase noise. Using 0.35 µm CMOS technology, simulation results show that applying the technique to the simple ring oscillator allows a frequency oscillation improvement of 80%. Also, simulations show that frequency improvement can reach 300 % if the technique is associated to a positive feedback.

An Improved Performance Ring Oscillator Design

Voltage Controlled Oscillator is one of the most important basic building block for analog, digital as well as in mixed signal circuits. This paper presents a new technique to improve the performance of ring oscillator. The VCO is based on single ended ring oscillator. The circuit is designed using 0.13 CMOS technology with supply voltage of 3.3 V. A VCO with high frequency range from 2.26GHz to 3.50 GHz is achieved by using this technique. Simulation results reveal the better performance of the proposed design as compared to existing current staved ring VCO in terms of oscillation frequency and power consumption.

Design of Improved Performance Voltage Controlled Ring Oscillator

This paper presents the ring oscillator based temperature sensor. The method is highly area efficient, simple and easy for IC implementation as compared to traditional temper ature sensors. The proposed temperature sensor was fabricated using 0.35 μm technology, which occupies extremely small silicon area. It exploits the frequency of the ring oscillator that is proportional to temperature, which is displayed in the form of a digital output. The proposed temperature sensor comprises a ring oscillator, a voltage level shifter, a 10-bit counter, and a 10-bit register. The designed ring oscillator is frequency-tunable and the voltage level shifter provides the output to full-scale to make sure that the number of its rising edge is counted by the counter. The register saves the counted output.

Ring Oscillator Based CMOS Temperature Sensor Design

This paper proposes a low voltage current mirror circuit with low input impedance and high output impedance. These improvements are obtained by adding an amplifier which provides biasing voltage to the transistors. Its operation and results are compared with conventional and cascode current mirror circuits. The circuits are designed using Tanner EDA Tool in 90nm CMOS technology with 0.8V supply voltage. Simulation results shows that the minimum output voltage is reduced to 0.1 V, also input resistance is reduced to 0.179k? and consumes only 46µW power. This paper presents a complete design and simulation of a Photovoltaic System (PVS) with capable of Maximum Power Point Tracking (MPPT). In this paper Incremental Conductance Method (ICM) is adopted for the MPPT technique. The proposed PV System is modelled and simulated in MATLAB/Simulink GUI environment. Finally, dynamic performance of the proposed PV System with ICM is presented to demonstrate its capability of MPPT, which has a better tracking performance.
