Carbon nanomaterials are receiving worldwide attention because of their multi-faceted superiority in thermal conductivity, flame retardancy, mechanical stability, electrical conductivity, and biocompatibility. In this review, a survey of the literature on extending performance of epoxy resins based on carbon nanomaterials is presented. The structure-performance relationships for different carbon nanomaterials modified epoxy are closely analyzed. The performance extension in mechanical, electrical, thermal conductivity, flame retardancy, antidegradation, and tribological properties of epoxy are reviewed in detail. Other application areas including biocompatibility, biodegradability, gas barrier properties, shape memory, and electromagnetic interference shielding are touched. The challenges and opportunities in carbon nanomaterials functionalized epoxy composites are also discussed.

Effects of highly crystalline and conductive polyaniline/graphene oxide composites on the corrosion protection performance of a zinc-rich epoxy coating

In this research, tetraethyl orthosilicate (TEOS) is used as organosilane to decorate the surface of graphene oxide (GO) nanosheets by SiO2 nanospheres via a facile method. Results of X-ray diffraction analysis, Raman spectroscopy, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, field emission scanning electron microscopy, and atomic force microscopy reveal that SiO2 nanospheres have covered the surface of GO sheets through covalent bonding and SiO2-GO nanohybrids are successfully synthesized. Further, the effect of incorporating 0.1 wt% GO nanosheets and/or SiO2-GO nanohybrids on properties of epoxy coatings is investigated. The results show that the pull-off adhesion strength of epoxy coatings to mild steel substrates and the water contact angle on coatings significantly increase via adding SiO2-GO nanohybrids. The potentiodynamic polarization test, electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) and salt spray test results demonstrate that corrosion protection performance of epoxy coatings remarkably enhances by embedding well-distributed SiO2-GO nanohybrids compared to GO nanosheets.

Investigating the effect of SiO2-graphene oxide hybrid as inorganic nanofiller on corrosion protection properties of epoxy coatings

For the removal and separation of wastewater pollutants, one widely used technique is adsorption. Different materials have been used as adsorbents. Among several adsorbents, carbon nanotubes (CNTs) are emerging as potential adsorbents because of their large surface area, defined cylindrical hollow structure, high ratio aspect, easy modification and hydrophobic wall surfaces. In this review, the capability of adsorption of dyes on CNTs and functionalized CNTs has been compiled. This paper provides data about defects, adsorption sites on CNTs and adsorption process studies under the effect of such various operational parameters as solution pH, contact time, and temperature, and deals with the mechanisms involved in the adsorption of dyes onto CNTs. According to observations from the articles reviewed, functionalized carbon nanotubes have better sorption capacity than as-grown CNTs. For the removal of dyes from aqueous solution, carbon nanotubes (CNTs) have shown good potential and some of the functional groups improve the adsorption potential according to evidence from the literature. For example, the maximum adsorption amount (qmax) of methylene blue dye on an MWCNT surface has been reported to be 100 mg g−1 while the maximum adsorption amount of methylene blue dye on functionalized MWCNT–SH surface was 166.7 mg g−1. This indicates that functionalization is beneficial in increasing the amounts of absorption. However, the development of highly efficient, cost effective environmentally friendly CNT-based nano adsorbents for their commercial applications should be the focus of still more study.

Removal of dye molecules from aqueous solution by carbon nanotubes and carbon nanotube functional groups: critical review

This study investigated the effects of incorporation of two different shapes functionalization fullerene C60 (FC60) and functionalization graphene (FG), into the polymer matrix on the tribological and anti-corrosion performances of epoxy coating. The structural and morphological characterization was examined using Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, X-ray diffraction, Raman spectroscopy, transmission electron microscopy and scanning electron microscopy. It was found that the functional groups had been grafted on the surface of C60 and G. The tribological and anti-corrosion results indicated that composite coatings showed a lower friction coefficient, wear traces area and higher anti-corrosion in comparison with neat epoxy, owing to the balance of reinforcement, lubrication and barrier properties of nanofillers and cracks generated by them, and optimal additive concentration of FC60 and FG both were 0.5 wt.%. Furthermore, this work opens up that FC60/EP coatings exhibited better tribological performance but worse corrosion resistance ability compared with FG/EP coatings due to the different shapes of nanofillers. Different tribological and anti-corrosion mechanisms were analyzed in details.
