New methods of optical fuzzy-logic operations and optical fuzzy-controller synthesis are proposed and experimentally demonstrated by use of optical fan-out elements to achieve multiple imaging and polarization-space/aperture data encoding to represent fuzzy variables in optics. Sixteen fuzzy-logic operations between two inputs are achieved by use of a simple polarization-space data-encoding and kernel-operation scheme. In addition, a max-min composition-based fuzzy controller is implemented by use of an aperture-data-encoding and a double-multi-imaging approach. Our systems exhibit a high operation speed, a large information throughput, and a high signal-to-noise ratio.

Optical implementation of fuzzy-set reasoning

A new optoelectronic fuzzy inference system is proposed for processing a large number of fuzzy rules in parallel. The proposed system using spatial light modulator implements various membership functions as well as max–min inference. It has the features of easy implementation and large data processing capability. The membership function decomposition method is used to save space bandwidth and accommodate multiple-input fuzzy inference.

Parallel optical fuzzy logic inference using a SLM-based architecture

We use a stimulated echo hologram to consider performing logical operations on sets represented in the form of images. We show that a stimulated echo hologram can be used to perform the logical operation of set intersection.

A novel optical implementation using a joint transform cor- relator for parallel fuzzy inference and logic processing is presented. In particular, space-variant correlation is shown to be suited for implement- ing the fuzzy set matching.
