In this paper, we investigate a distributed machine learning approach for a multiuser mobile edge computing (MEC) network in a cognitive eavesdropping environment, where multiple secondary devices (SDs) have some tasks with different priorities to be computed. The SDs can be allowed to use the wireless spectrum as long as the interference to the primary user is tolerated, and an eavesdropper in the network can overhear the confidential message from the SDs, which threatens the data offloading. For the considered system, we firstly present three optimization criteria, whereas criterion I aims to minimize the linear combination of latency and energy consumption, criterion II tries to minimize the latency under a constraint on the energy consumption, and criterion III is to minimize the energy consumption under a constraint on the latency. We then exploit a federated learning framework to solve these optimization problems, by optimizing the offloading ratio, bandwidth and computational capability allocation ratio. Simulation results are finally demonstrated to show that the proposed method can effectively reduce the system cost in terms of latency and energy consumption, and meanwhile ensure more bandwidth and computational capability allocated to the user with a higher taskpriority.

Distributed Machine Learning for Multiuser Mobile Edge Computing Systems

In this paper, we investigate a mobile edge computing (MEC) network, where the user has some computational tasks to be assisted by multiple computational access points (CAPs) through offloading. We consider practical communication scenarios with limited spectrum resources, and the cochannel interference arising from the aggressive reuse of frequency severely degrades the system offloading performance. To enhance the system performance, we provide three CAP selection criteria to choose one best CAP among multiple ones. Specifically, criterion I maximizes the computational capability at the CAP, criterion II minimizes the interfering power, while criterion III maximizes the instantaneous channel gain of data link. In time-varying channel environments, the CAP selection may be outdated, which deteriorates the system performance. For the three criteria, we evaluate the system outage probability in the outdated channel state information (CSI) by taking into account the latency, energy consumption and data rate, and provide the analytical and asymptotic expressions of outage probability, from which we obtain some critical insights on the system design. Simulation results are finally demonstrated to verify the proposed studies. In particular, criterion III under the perfect CSI can achieve the system whole diversity order coming from multiple CAPs.

Outdated Access Point Selection for Mobile Edge Computing With Cochannel Interference

Abstract In this paper, we investigate how to analytically design an analytical offloading strategy for a multiuser mobile edge computing (MEC)-based smart internet of vehicle (IoV), where there are multiple computational access points (CAPs) which can help compute tasks from the vehicular users. As it is difficult to derive an analytical offloading ratio for a general MEC-based IoV network, we turn to provide an analytical offloading scheme for some special MEC networks including one-to-one, one-to-two and two-to-one cases. For each case, we study the system performance by using the linear combination of latency and energy consumption, and derive the analytical offloading ratio through minimizing the system cost. Simulation results are finally presented to verify the proposed studies. In particular, the proposed analytical offloading scheme can achieve the optimal performance of the brute force (BF) scheme. The analytical results in this paper can serve as an important reference for the analytical offloading design for a general MEC-based IoV.

Analytical offloading design for mobile edge computing-based smart internet of vehicle

This paper investigates a wireless federated learning (FL) network with limited communication bandwidth, where multiple mobile clients train their individual models with the help of one central server. We consider the practical communication scenarios, where the clients should complete the local computation and model upload within a defined latency. By jointly exploiting the dynamic characteristics of wireless channels and computational capability at the clients, we optimize the federated learning network by maximizing the number of active clients under the constraints of both latency and bandwidth. Specifically, we propose two bandwidth allocation (BA) schemes, where scheme I is based on the instantaneous channel state information (CSI), while scheme II employs the particle swarm optimization (PSO) method, based on the statistical CSI. Simulation results on the test accuracy and convergence rate are finally provided to demonstrate the advantages of the proposed optimization schemes for the considered FL network.

System Optimization of Federated Learning Networks with A Constrained Latency

In this paper, we investigate a secure mobile edge computing (MEC) network in the presence of multiple eavesdroppers, where multiple users can offload parts of their tasks to the computational access point (CAP). The multiple eavesdroppers may overhear the confidential task offloading, which leads to information leakage. In order to address this issue, we present the minimization problem of the secrecy outage probability (SOP), by jointly taking into account the constraints from the latency and energy consumption. With the aim to improve the system secrecy performance, we then introduce three user selection criteria to choose the best user among multiple ones. Specifically, criterion I maximizes the locally computational capacity, while criterion II and III maximize the secrecy capacity and data rate of main links, respectively. For these criteria, we further analyze the system secrecy performance by deriving analytical and asymptotic expressions for the SOP, from which we can conclude important insights for the system design. Finally, simulation and analytical results are provided to verify the proposed analysis. The results show that the three criteria can efficiently safeguard the MEC networks, compared to the traditional local computing and fully offloading, especially with a large value of user number.

Secure Mobile Edge Computing Networks in the Presence of Multiple Eavesdroppers

Although the frequency-division duplex (FDD) massive multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) system can offer high spectral and energy efficiency, it requires to feedback the downlink channel state information (CSI) from users to the base station (BS), in order to fulfill the precoding design at the BS. However, the large dimension of CSI matrices in the massive MIMO system makes the CSI feedback very challenging, and it is urgent to compress the feedback CSI. To this end, this paper proposes a novel dilated convolution based CSI feedback network, namely DCRNet. Specifically, the dilated convolutions are used to enhance the receptive field (RF) of the proposed DCRNet without increasing the convolution size. Moreover, advanced encoder and decoder blocks are designed to improve the reconstruction performance and reduce computational complexity as well. Numerical results are presented to show the superiority of the proposed DCRNet over the conventional networks. In particular, the proposed DCRNet can achieve almost the state-of-the-arts (SOTA) performance with much lower floating point operations (FLOPs). Dilated Convolution based CSI Feedback Compression for Massive MIMO Systems.

In this paper, we investigate how to deploy computational intelligence and deep learning (DL) in edge-enabled industrial IoT networks. In this system, the IoT devices can collaboratively train a shared model without compromising data privacy. However, due to limited resources in the industrial IoT networks, including computational power, bandwidth, and channel state, it is challenging for many devices to accomplish local training and upload weights to the edge server in time. To address this issue, we propose a novel multi-exit-based federated edge learning (ME-FEEL) framework, where the deep model can be divided into several sub-models with different depths and output prediction from the exit in the corresponding sub-model. In this way, the devices with insufficient computational power can choose the earlier exits and avoid training the complete model, which can help reduce computational latency and enable devices to participate into aggregation as much as possible within a latency threshold. Moreover, we propose a greedy approach-based exit selection and bandwidth allocation algorithm to maximize the total number of exits in each communication round. Simulation experiments are conducted on the classical Fashion-MNIST dataset under a non-independent and identically distributed (non-IID) setting, and it shows that the proposed strategy outperforms the conventional FL. In particular, the proposed ME-FEEL can achieve an accuracy gain up to 32.7% in the industrial IoT networks with the severely limited resources.
