Experience and Educationis the best concise statement on education ever published by John Dewey, the man acknowledged to be the pre-eminent educational theorist of the twentieth century. Written more than two decades after Democracy and Education(Dewey's most comprehensive statement of his position in educational philosophy), this book demonstrates how Dewey reformulated his ideas as a result of his intervening experience with the progressive schools and in the light of the criticisms his theories had received. Analysing both "traditional" and "progressive" education, Dr. Dewey here insists that neither the old nor the new education is adequate and that each is miseducative because neither of them applies the principles of a carefully developed philosophy of experience. Many pages of this volume illustrate Dr. Dewey's ideas for a philosophy of experience and its relation to education. He particularly urges that all teachers and educators looking for a new movement in education should think in terms of the deeped and larger issues of education rather than in terms of some divisive "ism" about education, even such an "ism" as "progressivism." His philosophy, here expressed in its most essential, most readable form, predicates an American educational system that respects all sources of experience, on that offers a true learning situation that is both historical and social, both orderly and dynamic.

With its central role in the development of public-private partnership (PPP) contracts, procurement structure has a significant influence on the economic and policy success of privately-financed toll roads throughout their lifecycle. Following a review of PPP fundamentals and the public-policy differentiation between public interest and public objectives, several approaches for establishing the key contract strategies of toll pricing, concession length, and risk mitigation are explored. These underpinnings motivate the central research question: Given specific policy objectives for road pricing, how should public owners select PPP contract strategies which support these outcomes? Through qualitative comparative analysis (QCA), a recently-developed method for evaluating qualitative data quantitatively, patterns of PPP contract strategies which correspond to three common policy objectives—achieving a specific toll rate, managing congestion, and minimizing state subsidy/maximizing revenue—are identified through evaluation of 18 domestic and international projects. Three practical decision-making tools resulting from this work are illustrated through application to current PPP procurements: (1) a traffic-risk worksheet, which provides a rapid estimate of a toll-financed project’s viability; (2) analytical QCA results, which offer guidance for structuring PPP contracts based on the desired pricing objectives; and (3) caselibrary comparisons, which enable drawing parallels between proposed procurements and established PPP projects. Additional insights explore the nature of risk in this study, which concludes with thoughts on the appropriate role of PPPs in infrastructure delivery.

Saudi Teachers’ Experiences and Attitudes Toward Integrating Video Games for Learning: Affordances and Constraints of Using Video Games in Saudi Arabian Classrooms

Purpose




The purpose of this paper is twofold: first, it seeks the perception of public-private partnership (PPP) experts on the importance of desirable PPP information that can be voluntarily reported by the private sector; and second, it determines the extent and quality of voluntary disclosure of PPP information by private entities.




Design/methodology/approach




In achieving the first objective, the study uses a questionnaire survey. The questionnaire was distributed to PPP experts and 25 usable responses were received. In addressing the second objective, a content analysis procedure was utilized to analyse the 2015 annual reports of 11 construction companies. Descriptive statistics including the mean score, frequency and percentage were employed to analyse the responses of the questionnaire instrument and the annual reports disclosure.




Findings




The results of the questionnaire survey reveal that the majority of the items were rated as very important to be disclosed by the private sector in Malaysia. However, from the content analysis, it was also revealed that the extent and quality of voluntary information disclosed by the private construction companies were low.




Originality/value




This study is important as it contributes to the scant literature on PPP disclosure in Malaysia. The study is unique as it not only investigated the extent and quality of voluntary disclosure by private entities, but also solicited the perception of PPP experts on what voluntary items should be disclosed.

Disclosure of public-private partnership (PPP) voluntary information: Case of Malaysian PPP projects

This empirical study examines whether, and if so, to what extent, firms report on Public Private Partnership (PPP) projects to signal PPP engagement even beyond legal obligations. The annual reports of the sample’s firms listed on the VSE in 2005 have been investigated in a qualitative and quantitative way to reveal information policy. Annual reports confirming PPP activities are examined qualitatively by an in-depth content analysis to answer the question in which way information about the revealed PPP projects is published. Further, predetermined keywords that at least indicate a PPP participation are statistically evaluated. The results outline that annual reports only give little and predominantly unspecific information on PPP which emphasizes the absence of corresponding reporting obligations and of a standardized PPP definition.

Understanding Player Activity in a Game-based Virtual Learning Environment: A Case for Data-Driven Instructional Design

Implementing the targets of eBologna, the University of Vienna initiated the project “eAccounting”. Set up within a virtual learning environment, the customized teaching and learning management system didactically follows the Blended Learning approach. Specific challenges comprise the inhomogeneous level of accounting knowledge, different language skills of mostly non-native speaking first-year students, large-scale classes with more than 500 students, the multi-faceted fields of accounting and the comprehensive use of the platform in transdisciplinary as well as consecutive courses. As these diversities are not yet covered by already existing didactical concepts and technical solutions, eAccounting meets the demand of a customized, notwithstanding universally applicable Learning Management System. Working with open source software enables the embedding of both individual and cooperative dynamic learning features by various selfdeveloped scripts and randomized applications to generate educationally sustained added value.

Designing A Virtual Learning Environment For Accounting Lectures.

This paper exemplifies the curricular framework of instructional design in management education at universities. The Magic Cube of eAccounting meets the didactical challenges concerning heterogeneous levels of preknowledge within large-scale accounting classes up to 600â??mostly non-native speakingâ??undergraduate students. Following the Blended Learning approach, the presented pedagogical concept subsumes diverse subjects in the field of accounting and its inclusive adoption in continuative well as comprehensive courses. The applied methodology deals with these multi-dimensional impacts directed by a didactic rationale. The e-Learning architecture shows a universally applicable design and may be customized. The eAccounting project was developed at the Faculty of Business, Economics and Statistics at the University of Vienna and has been implemented in 2008.
