Aim To compare Biodentine and White ProRoot mineral trioxide aggregate (MTA) with regard to Ca and Si uptake by adjacent root canal dentine in the presence of phosphate-buffered saline (PBS). Methodology Root canals of bovine incisor root segments were instrumented, filled with either Biodentine or MTA (n = 20 each) and then immersed in Ca-and Mg-free PBS for 1, 7, 30 or 90 days (n =5 each). Unfilled, unimmersed dentine specimens (n =5 ) served as controls. The specimens were sectioned longitudinally, and the ultrastructure of the dentine‐ material interface and the elemental composition/ distribution in the material‐adjacent dentine were analysed using a wavelength-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy electron probe microanalyser with image observation function. Data were statistically analyzed using one-way anova and Tukey’s honestly significant difference test or the Mann‐Whitney U-test. Results Along the material‐dentine interface, both materials formed a tag-like structure that was composed of either Ca- and P-rich crystalline deposits or the material itself. The width of a Ca- and Si-rich layer detected along the dentine layer of the material‐ dentine interface showed increases over time. The Caand Si-rich layer width was significantly larger (P < 0.05) in Biodentine than MTA at 30 and 90 days. Conclusions Both Biodentine and MTA caused the uptake of Ca and Si in the adjacent root canal dentine in the presence of PBS. The dentine element uptake was more prominent for Biodentine than MTA.

Mineral trioxide aggregate (MTA) is a dental material used extensively for vital pulp therapies (VPT), protecting scaffolds during regenerative endodontic procedures, apical barriers in teeth with necrotic pulps and open apices, perforation repairs as well as root canal filling and root-end filling during surgical endodontics. A number of bioactive endodontic cements (BECs) have recently been introduced to the market. Most of these materials have calcium and silicate in their compositions; however, bioactivity is a common property of these cements. These materials include the following: BioAggregate, Biodentine, BioRoot RCS, calcium-enriched mixture cement, Endo-CPM, Endocem, EndoSequence, EndoBinder, EndoSeal MTA, iRoot, MicroMega MTA, MTA Bio, MTA Fillapex, MTA Plus, Neo MTA Plus, Ortho MTA, Quick-Set, Retro MTA, Tech Biosealer, and TheraCal LC. It has been claimed that these materials have properties similar to those of MTA but without the drawbacks. In Part I of this review, the available information on the chemical composition of the materials listed above was reviewed and their applications for VPT was discussed. In this article, the clinical applications of MTA and other BECs will be reviewed for apexification, regenerative endodontics, perforation repair, root canal filling, root-end filling, restorative procedures, periodontal defects and treatment of vertical and horizontal root fractures. In addition, the literature regarding the possible drawbacks of these materials following their clinical applications is reviewed. These drawbacks include their discolouration potential, systemic effects and retreatability following use as a root filling material. Based on selected keywords, all publications were searched regarding the use of MTA as well as BECs for the relevant clinical applications. Numerous publications were found regarding the use of BECs for various endodontic applications. The majority of these investigations compared BECs with MTA. Despite promising results for some materials, the number of publications using BECs for various clinical applications was limited. Furthermore, most studies had several methodological shortcomings and low levels of evidence.

Tissue Reaction to Silver Nanoparticles Dispersion as an Alternative Irrigating Solution

– The aim of this study was to evaluate the rat subcutaneous tissue reaction to implanted polyethylene tubes filled with mineral trioxide aggregate (MTA) FILLAPEX® compared to the reaction to tubes filled with Sealapex® or Angelus MTA®. These materials were placed in polyethylene tubes and implanted into the dorsal connective tissue of Wistar rats for 7, 15, 30, 60, and 90 days. The specimens were stained with hematoxylin and eosin or Von Kossa or left unstained for examination under polarized light. Qualitative and quantitative evaluations of the reaction were performed. All materials caused moderate reactions after 7 days, which decreased with time. The reactions were moderate and similar to that evoked by the control and Sealapex® on the 15th day. MTA FILLAPEX® and Angelus MTA caused mild reactions beginning after 15 days. Mineralization and granulation birefringent to polarized light were observed with all materials. It was concluded that MTA FILLAPEX® was biocompatible and stimulated mineralization.
