Methods of Analysis of Soils, Plants, Waters and Fertilisers

Under conditions of sulfur (S)-deficient soil, applied S fertilization had a significant repressive effect on fungal infections such as that of oilseed rape and grapes with light leaf spot (Pyrenopeziza brassicae) and powdery mildew (Uncinula necator), respectively. For potatoes (Solanum tuberosum L.) it has been shown in earlier literature that elemental sulfur fertilization increased yield of potato tubers and improved tuber quality and resistance against Streptomyces scabies; the bactericidal effect was attributed to a reduced soil pH. So far, however, no information is available about the influence of S supply on bacterial and fungal diseases in potatoes. Relationships between soil parameters and physiological status of Miscanthus x giganteus cultivated on soil contaminated with trace elements under NPK fertilisation vs. microbial inoculation

A field experiment was conducted at Central Research Institute for Jute and Allied Fibres (ICAR), Barrackpore, West Bengal to find out an effective pre-emergence herbicide for weed management in jute (cv. JRO 8432). Grasses, broadleaved weeds and sedges were found in the experimental field with highest intensity of infestation by grasses (90-95%). The predominant grass was Echinochloa colona (L.) Link. Phyllanthus niruri L., Physalis minima L. and Cleome sp were the dominant broadleaved weeds and the only sedge was Cyperus rotundus L. Trifluralin at 0.75-1.0 kg a.i./ha resulted higher weed control efficiency (86 - 91%) at 8 WAS as compared to two manual weeding and the same trend was obseived throughout the growth of jute. Among the different doses of Trifluralin, 0.75 kg a.i./ha gave the highest weed control efficiency for all date of observations, whereas, Trifluralin at 1.0 kg a.i./ha favoured growth of sedge weeds due to absolute control of Echinochloa colona leaving little interspecific competition for sedge. Application of 0.75-1.0 kg a.i./ha of Trifluralin at I day before sowing as pre-plant soil incorporation controlled grass and broadleaf weeds for a wider period starting from the early crop­ weed competition phase and yielded better (28 - 44% more) than the conventional two manual weeding. In the recommended dose of Trifluralin (up to l kg a.i./ha), there was no problem of residue in soil after the haivest of jute crop as evidenced from bioassay and HPLC studies.

The effect of various fertilizer treatments on jute (Corchorus olitorius) and their residual effect on soil fertility along with the microbial dynamics in jute rhizosphere were studied during 2008-11. Application of recommended dose of fertilizer (100 % NPK) was sufficient for jute fibre yield while nutrient uptake was significantly higher with 150% NPK but at par only with 100% NPK + 10 tonnes FYM/ha when N and P are considered. The population of beneficial microbes and enzymatic activities, viz. dehydrogenase, urease, fluorescein diacetate hydrolyzing activity, acid and alkaline phosphatase in jute rhizosphere after 60 days of sowing were significantly higher with 100% NPK + 10 tonnes FYM/ha over all treatments including 100 and 150% NPK. The soil microbial biomass carbon and basal soil respiration rate in jute rhizosphere followed the same trend as that of enzyme activities. There was build up of residual soil fertility after three years in all the treatments except control and 50% NPK compared to initial status and the application of 100% NPK with 10 tonnes FYM/ha helped in higher residual status of organic carbon, available N, P and K in soil. Integration of recommended dose of fertilizer with 10 tonnes FYM/ha proved to be the best possible option for sustainable jute fibre production and maintenance of soil microbial health and fertility status.

Response of summer rice (Oryza sativa L.) to different organic and inorganic sources of nutrients

A field experiment Was conducted during pre-rainy season, rainy season (kharif) and winter season (rabi) of 1989-90 and 1990-91 to evaluate the productivity and fertility building under intensive cropping of rice (Oryzasativa L)-potato (Solanum tuberosum. L)-sesame (Sesamum indicum L). The productivity of rice and potato was maximum where these crops were fertilized 'With 75% (N, P and K@ 45, 10 and 19 kg/ha for rice; 7S, 33 and 62 kg/ha for potato) of the recommended doses of N, P (through single superphosphate) and K (60,13 and 25 kg/ha for rice; 100,44 and 83 kg/ha for potato) it) conjunction with farmyard manure @ 10 tonnes/ha. Sesame grown on residual fertility recorded maximum seed yield (1.4 tonnes/ha) in the treatment receiving 75% of the reoommended fertilizer applied to both rice and potato along with incorporation of crop residues of each crop in the sequence. Exclusion of single superphosphate having 12% S either from potato or from rice reduced the productivity of all the 3 crops. Nutrient uptake was maximum where both rice and potato were fertilized with 100% of the recommended doses of N, P (as single superphosphate) and K Total N. and the available P, K and S status oCthe soil improved when both rice and potato were fertilized with 75% of the recommended fertilizer along with farmyard manure@ 10 tonnes/ha or incorporation of crop residues. Negative· balance of S was recorded under the treatments receiving no single superphosphate, farmyard manure or crop residues. Application.of farmyard manure @ 10 tonnes/ha to both rice and potato in conjunction with 75% (N. P and K @ 45, 10 and 19 kg/ha in rice; 75,33 and 62 kg/ha in potato) of the recommended fertilizer was more remunerative than that of 100%.
