In this research, a supply chain network has been designed for inventory management using not only the project site storage facility but also an ancillary warehouse to keep materials. In order to make decision about the appropriate place for building the warehouse, multi-criteria decision-making techniques have been applied. Since the transportation sector, as the most important energy-consuming part, plays a significant role in global warming after power stations and the delivery of materials will have environmental impacts, this research tried to minimize the external cost of global warming caused by transportation. In this study, a mathematical formulation is presented to solve the problem of ordering the required amount to project site, while taking into account an ancillary warehouse. To quell the discussion, a numerical example has been demonstrated. The findings show that uncertainty considerations fortify the strict decision making and can increase the confidence level.

Building demolition waste management through smart BIM: A case study in Hong Kong.

Purpose Designing the construction site layout is a facilities allocation problem where allocating facilities in the right place would help in reducing the overall construction cost. Most of the relevant peer-reviewed literature discussed static site layout models where facilities are allocated once throughout the construction period. More recently, dynamic site layout models were introduced to allow relocation of facilities in between the stages. This is because most of the site facilities are not required throughout the whole construction period. Methodology This article presents a comprehensive literature review of the construction site layout problem for both static and dynamic approaches. Findings Peer-reviewed articles on construction site layout optimization were collected and their methods, assumptions, limitations and contributions were summarized and critically analyzed to provide a key-reference point for decision makers and researchers in this field. A gap analysis of the literature was done and recommendations for future research are presented.

Construction site layout planning problem: Past, present and future

The establishment of smart construction sites employing smart technologies for real-time interconnection, communication, and interaction has emerged as an interesting topic for researchers and practitioners in the architecture, engineering, and construction industry as they contribute to effective, efficient, and high-quality on-site management. However, little consideration has been involved in the comprehensive management of health, safety, and environment (HSE) issues using smart technologies. To address this gap, this study first performs a systematic procedure to identify the articles (results = 325) associated with the on-site application of smart technologies for HSE and conducts a quantitative and qualitative analysis on their research trend and interests. A bibliometric analysis of publication numbers by year, country and region, and journal presents the research state quo and trends, and a keyword co-occurrence analysis is conducted to show the interests of this topic. Based on these interests, different smart technologies including techniques and devices are categorized for on-site HSE management objectives. Moreover, a comprehensive framework for smart technologies in HSE management and a blueprint for HSE-oriented smart construction site establishment are put forward. This study develops a basis to understand the current application of smart technologies in HSE management and contributes to the implementation of smart construction sites for sustainable construction.

Integrating Hoisting Efficiency into Construction Site Layout Plan Model for Prefabricated Construction

This paper aims to analyze and provide insight on the algorithms for the optimization of construction site layout planning (CSLP). It resolves problems, such as the selection of suitable algorithms, considering the optimality, optimization objectives and representation of layout solutions. The approaches for the better utilization of optimization algorithms are also presented.,To achieve the above, existing records (results = 200) were selected from three databases: Web of Science, ScienceDirect and Scopus. By implementing a systematic protocol, the articles related to the optimization algorithms for the CLSP (results = 75) were identified. Moreover, various related themes were collated and analyzed according to a coding structure.,The results indicate the consistent and increasing interest on the optimization algorithms for the CLSP, revealing that the trend in shifting to smart approaches in the construction industry is significant. Moreover, the interest in metaheuristic algorithms is dominant because 65.3% of the selected articles focus on these algorithms. The optimality, optimization objectives and solution representations are also important in algorithm selection. With the employment of other algorithms, self-developed applications and commercial software, optimization algorithms can be better utilized for solving CSLP problems. The findings also identify the gaps and directions for future research.,The selection of articles in this review does not consider the industrial perspective and practical applications of commercial software. Further comparative analyses of major algorithms are necessary because this review only focuses on algorithm types.,This paper presents a comprehensive systematic review of articles published in the recent decade. It significantly contributes to the demonstration of the status and selection of CLSP algorithms and the benefit of using these algorithms. It also identifies the research gaps in knowledge and reveals potential improvements for future research.

Optimization algorithms for construction site layout planning: a systematic literature review

Due to the maneuverability and flexibility of unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs), the UAV-enabled data collection systems for wireless sensor networks (WSN) have received widespread attention. However, the state-of-the-art UAV trajectory designs mainly focus on static environments, which are not applicable in the practical scenarios considered in this work, e.g., mobile nodes, decommissioning of existing nodes, and new emergency nodes. This article proposes a two-level deep reinforcement learning (DRL) framework to solve this challenge. The first-level deep neural network (DNN) is applied to model the dynamic changing environment. In the second level, we employ a deep Q-learning network to plan a trajectory online according to the environment features from the first level DNN. Besides, online trajectory planning is performed by a low-power UAV edge computing platform. To enable online planning on the power-constraint UAV edge-computing platform, all networks adopt a lightweight low-complexity optimization design. According to simulation results, the proposed system achieves higher data acquisition success rates when compared to existing state-of-the-art methods. We also perform field tests on the proposed UAV edge computing platform, which also demonstrates high data acquisition performance.
