Characteristic of the 20th century, in terms of civil engineering, is intensive construction without taking care about preservation of the natural resources and the impact of buildings on the environment in all stages of service life, especially after demolition of buildings and waste deposition. Because of that, at the end of the last century, generation of huge amounts of waste became one of the biggest environmental problems in the majority of the world. Recycling of 'old' concrete is accepted as one of sustainable solutions for the problems of construction and demolition waste (C&D) and preservation of natural resources of aggregate. The first part of the paper presents technological procedure for recycled concrete aggregate production, basic properties of obtained aggregate and properties of recycled aggregate concrete. In the second part of the paper, results of own comparative investigation of properties of common and self-compacting concrete with coarse recycled concrete aggregate, are briefly presented. It was concluded that by using of quality uncontaminated recycled concrete aggregate it is possible to produce concrete with satisfactory performances that are not different from properties of ordinary concrete produced with natural aggregate. .

Possibility of application of old concrete as a new kind of aggregate in modern construction

The structure of Delta City shopping mall in Belgrade consists of two separate structures: the structure of the mall and the structure of the multi-storey open garage. The overall dimensions of the irregular layout of the structure are 210 m × 120 m, with four main levels in the mall and five parking levels in the garage. Because of the different exposure conditions, the structure of the garage is separated from the mall's structure with an expansion joint at all of the levels, except the level of the foundation slab. The mall's framed structure is designed without any expansion joints, except for temporary joints during the construction stage. It consists mainly of reinforced concrete columns cast in place, at typical spans of 8·2 m × 8·2 m, precast reinforced concrete simple beams and precast prestressed hollow core slabs. Model Code 2010 creep and shrinkage models extension to recycled aggregate concrete

Due to the extremely large global production and utilization of concrete, the concrete industry is considered a large consumer of energy and natural resources and one of the main sources of greenhouse emissions and waste generation. Reducing its impacts on the environment is one of the most important paths toward sustainable construction development. Replacing cement and natural aggregates with byproducts and waste from other industries is one possible way of achieving this goal. On the other hand, the disposal of industrial waste, which arises from the pyrometallurgical process of copper production, presents a significant environmental load in many developed countries. Research performed so far has shown that concrete made with aggregate obtained from cooper slag instead of natural aggregate can be produced with good physical-mechanical properties for various applications. In this work, a cradle-to-gate Life Cycle Assessment of several concrete mixtures where part of the coarse natural aggregate was replaced with copper slag aggregate was performed. The conducted case study was based on Serbian LCI data and local conditions in the vicinity of the town of Bor in Serbia. Results showed that such concrete mixtures can bring environmental benefits regarding natural aggregate preservation and waste reduction if the transport distance of copper slag aggregates is smaller than 20 km. Therefore, from the environmental protection point-of-view, local application of such concrete is recommended.
