The Java Language Specification

Aspect-oriented programming (AOP) is a technique for improving separation of concerns in software design and implementation. AOP works by providing explicit mechanisms for capturing the structure of crosscutting concerns. This tutorial shows how to use AOP to implement crosscutting conerns in a concise modular way. It works with AspectJ, a seamless aspect-oriented extension to the Java(tm) programming language, and with AspectC, an aspect-oriented extension to C in the style of AspectJ. It also includes a description of their underlying model, in terms of which a wide range of AOP languages can be understood.

Aspect-oriented programming

A type system is a syntactic method for automatically checking the absence of certain erroneous behaviors by classifying program phrases according to the kinds of values they compute. The study of type systems -- and of programming languages from a type-theoretic perspective -- has important applications in software engineering, language design, high-performance compilers, and security.This text provides a comprehensive introduction both to type systems in computer science and to the basic theory of programming languages. The approach is pragmatic and operational; each new concept is motivated by programming examples and the more theoretical sections are driven by the needs of implementations. Each chapter is accompanied by numerous exercises and solutions, as well as a running implementation, available via the Web. Types and Programming Languages

Optimizing compilers for object-oriented languages apply static class analysis and other techniques to try to deduce precise information about the possible classes of the receivers of messages; if successful, dynamically-dispatched messages can be replaced with direct procedure calls and potentially further optimized through inline-expansion. By examining the complete inheritance graph of a program, which we call class hierarchy analysis, the compiler can improve the quality of static class information and thereby improve run-time performance. In this paper we present class hierarchy analysis and describe techniques for implementing this analysis effectively in both statically- and dynamically-typed languages and also in the presence of multi-methods. We also discuss how class hierarchy analysis can be supported in an interactive programming environment and, to some extent, in the presence of separate compilation. Finally, we assess the bottom-line performance improvement due to class hierarchy analysis alone and in combination with two other "competing" optimizations, profile-guided receiver class prediction and method specialization.

Optimization of Object-Oriented Programs Using Static Class Hierarchy Analysis

The artifacts constituting a software system often drift apart over time. We have developed the software reflexion model technique to help engineers perform various software engineering tasks by exploiting, rather than removing, the drift between design and implementation. More specifically, the technique helps an engineer compare artifacts by summarizing where one artifact (such as a design) is consistent with and inconsistent with another artifact (such as source). The technique can be applied to help a software engineer evolve a structural mental model of a system to the point that it is "good enough" to be used for reasoning about a task at hand. The software reflexion model technique has been applied to support a variety of tasks, including design conformance, change assessment, and an experimental reengineering of the million-lines-of-code Microsoft Excel product. We provide a formal characterization of the reflexion model technique, discuss practical aspects of the approach, relate experiences of applying the approach and tools, and place the technique into the context of related work.

Steele Jr. It is based on generic functions, multiple inheritance, declarative method combination, and a meta-object protocol.The first two chapters of this specification present a description of the standard Programmer Interface for the Common Lisp Object System. The first chapter contains a description of the concepts of the Common Lisp Object System, and the second contains a description of the functions and macros in the Common Lisp Object System Programmer Interface. The chapter "The Common Lisp Object System Meta-Object Protocol" describes how the Common Lisp Object System can be customized.The fundamental objects of the Common Lisp Object System are classes, instances, generic functions, and methods.A class object determines the structure and behavior of a set of other objects, which are called its instances. Every Common Lisp object is an instance of a class. The class of an object determines the set of operations that can be performed on the object.A generic function is a function whose behavior depends on the classes or identities of the arguments supplied to it. A generic function object contains a set of methods, a lambda-list, a method combination type, and other information. The methods define the class-specific behavior and operations of the generic function; a method is said to specialize a generic function. When invoked, a generic function executes a subset of its methods based on the classes of its arguments.A generic function can be used in the same ways that an ordinary function can be used in Common Lisp; in particular, a generic function can be used as an argument to funcall and apply and can be given a global or a local name.A method is an object that contains a method function, a sequence of parameter speclalizers that specify when the given method is applicable, and a sequence of qualifiers that is used by the method combination facility to distinguish among methods. Each required formal parameter of each method has an associated parameter specializer, and the method will be invoked only on arguments that satisfy its parameter specializers.The method combination facility controls the selection of methods, the order in which they are run, and the values that are returned by the generic function. The Common Lisp Object System offers a default method combination type and provides a facility for declaring new types of method combination.
