BACKGROUND: The increased prevalence of overweight and obesity in children and adolescents is associated with type 2 diabetes, hypertension, dyslipidemia, and cardiovascular diseases. The theory of planned behavior (TPB) efficiently explains the ability of perceived behavioral control and possibly attitude to enhance the motivations of the obese people to lose weight. Our aim was to investigate the effect of TPB-based education on weight loss in obese and overweight adolescents. METHODS: In an interventional study, simple random sampling was used to select 86 overweight and obese adolescents aged 13-18 years in the pediatric clinic at the Isfahan Cardiovascular Research Institute. Anthropometric measures and TPB constructs were collected using a researcher-made questionnaire. The questionnaires were filled out before and six weeks after the intervention. Participants received 5 sessions of training based on the constructs of the TPB. RESULTS: A significant increase was observed in the mean score for knowledge and TPB constructs (attitudes, subjective norms, perceived behavioral control, intention, and behavior) six weeks after the educational intervention (P < 0.001). Moreover, significant decrease in body mass index (P < 0.001), weight (P = 0.001), and waist circumference (P < 0.001) of adolescents were found after the educational intervention. CONCLUSION: The TPB-based interventions seem to be effective in losing weight in obese and overweight adolescents. This theory serves as a helpful theoretical framework for health-related behaviors and can be an appropriate pattern to plan for educational interventions.

Health Literacy and Its Relationship With Body Mass Index

Introduction: Nowadays, obesity is one of the major health problems in the world which is associated with lipid disorders and inflammatory profile. The aim of the present study was to determine the effect of three months of aerobic training on serum levels of adiponectin and resistin in obese men. Methods: In this quasi-experimental study, 24 middle-aged obese men who previously had an inactive lifestyle were selected through convenient sampling in Larestan and were then randomly assigned to one experimental group (performing aerobic training three sessions per week for three month) and one control group (with no training). Fasting levels of serum adiponectin and resistin were measured in both groups before and 48 hours after the last training session. Independent samples t-test and paired samples t-test were used to determine the intra- and inter-group changes. The level of significance was set at (p≤0.05). Results: The results revealed that three months of aerobic training led to a significant decrease in participants’ body fat percentage, body mass index, and weight (p <0.05). Furthermore, though there were no significant changes in the resistin levels (p = 0.34), serum levels of adiponectin (p = 0.04) were significantly increased after aerobic training. Conclusion: It is expected that a 3-month aerobic training with an intensity of 60-80% maximum heart rate could increase the serum levels of adiponectin in the middle-aged men due to improved homeostasis and fat metabolism.

The Effect of Three Months of Aerobic Training on Serum Levels of Adiponectin and Resistin in Obese Men

Introduction: Obesity is a complex health problem. The aim of this study was to determine the effects of regular walking with alternate day fasting (ADF) on health-related factors of overweight and obese females.‎  Methods: 30 healthy inactive, overweight and obese women were divided randomly into three equal groups.  The groups were: control group (BMI: 30.72±4.40 kg/m2); the experimental group I: ADF along with regular walking with 50% to 65% maximal heart rate (BMI: 28.69 ±2.81 kg/m2) and the experimental group II: ADF (BMI: 30.56 ±3.66 kg/m2). Participants were under the diet for six weeks. The diet ADF means that, they had days of fasting and free day (with regular walking), alternately. Two days before and two days after the end of the study, the participants’ fasting blood sugar were measured after 12 hours. Resting heart rate, blood pressure and body composition were assessed in the same day. The collected data were analyzed using paired t-test and ANOVA test. Results: Body mass index in both experimental groups had significant decrease‎ (P 0.05). Conclusion: The regular walking program and ADF diet is an effective method for improving body mass index, body fat percentage and blood sugar.

Complications of Peripheral Intravenous Catheters During 72 Hours After Insertion

Background: Overweight and obesity increasing world wide because of changing life style and dietary habits. Diet therapy plays an important role to prevent obesity outcomes. The aim of this study was determining the effects of diet therapy on weight reduction and fitness. Methods: A clinical trial study was conducted using convenient sampling method and 216 subjects (190 female and 26 male) were recruited using BMI > 27 cut-off. After primary examinations all subjects received a low calorie diet for six months. Weight, height, BMI, percent of body fat, fat free mass and total body water were determined and body composition were measured and recorded following six months nutritional intervention. Data was analyzed using repeated measure ANOVA. Results: The mean age of participants was 37.5+12.1 in women and 38.18+15.3 year in men. There was significant weight reduction between admission and six months after treatment 84.7+17.9 vs. 77.3+3.2kg (p<0.003). Significantly decrease in BMI before and after six months intervention 31.7+5.6 vs. 28.5+4.4 (p<0.003) was observed. The study showed more than 10% weight reduction after six months diet therapy (p<0.01). Conclusion: The study confirmed the effect of low calorie diet on weight reduction both in male and female which may reduce cardio vascular disease risk factors. Increasing public knowledge about healthy eating, weight management and obesity side effects as well as referring high-risk subjects to nutritionists for treatment highly recommended.
