Enhanced As(III) removal (>99.7) was achieved by a novel organoclay (HEX-VER) adsorbent in Pearl River Delta water. Single and simultaneous As(III) removal in the presence of Cd(II) and/or Pb(II) by batch adsorption tests was analyzed. Spectroscopic, spectrometric, microscopic, and potentiometric techniques were used for characterization of the adsorbents. The parameters affecting As(III) adsorption, including pH, kinetic, isotherm, thermodynamic, and co-existing ions (Cl−, F−, NO3−, CO32−, SO42−, Ca2+ and Mg2+) were also investigated. The results showed that HEX-VER owned different morphology and larger average pore diameter after functionalization, resulting in an improvement of As (III) adsorption capacity. Further analysis confirmed that adsorption was of the monomolecular layer, well-described by the Langmuir isotherm model. The dominant mechanisms for As(III) removal were ion-exchange and complexation. Moreover, HEX-VER was regenerated for five consecutive cycles, and the removal ratio was ≈ 92%, showing its great regeneration potential. These findings suggest that the proposed inexpensive adsorbent has potential for practical applications of As(III) removal from river water.

Enhanced Single and Simultaneous As(III) Adsorption in Pearl River Delta Water by Hexylamine Functionalized Vermiculite

Abstract Sm 0.95 Ho 0.05 FeO 3 was successfully prepared in a single phase using the citrate combustion method. The investigated sample was characterized using X-ray diffraction (XRD), a high-resolution transmission electron microscope (HRTEM) and X-ray photoemission spectroscopy (XPS). XRD confirmed that the sample was synthesized in an orthorhombic phase with an average crystallite size of 12 nm. HRTEM indicated that the sample was prepared in the nanoscale with an average particle size of 18 nm. XPS was used to identify the chemical bonds, binding energies and core levels of Sm 0.95 Ho 0.05 FeO 3 . The magnetic properties were studied using a vibrating sample magnetometer and DC magnetic susceptibility using Faraday’s method. The sample has an antiferromagnetic behavior with weak ferromagnetic components. The presence of magnetic Ho 3+ ions in the SmFeO 3 sample causes the magnetic exchange interaction between the 2 p orbital of Fe 3+ and the 4 d sub-shell of Ho 3+ ions. The dependence of pH value on the removal efficiency of Pb 2+ from water was studied. The maximum Pb 2+ removal efficiency of the Ho-doped SmFeO 3 nano perovskite is 26% at pH = 5 and 99% at pH = 8. The Freundlich, Langmuir and Temkin isotherms were studied to understand the adsorption mechanism. The Temkin adsorption isotherm best fitted with the experimental data.

Preparation, characterization and magnetic properties of Sm0.95Ho0.05FeO3 nanoparticles and their application in the purification of water

Perovskite has attracted the attention of researchers owing to its intriguing physicochemical properties and wide applications. Recently, Fe-based Perovskite as well as its nanoforms is an extensively studied material due to its photocatalytic activity, multiferroic properties, and chemical stability. Fe-based Perovskite exhibits a range of characteristics that become helpful for different applications such as catalysis, electrochemical sensors, and solar cells. This review summarizes the synthesis, properties, and environmental applications of Fe-based Perovskite. This review highlights and provides an overview of the transition metal substituent in Fe-based Perovskite and its properties and how it influences its application in wastewater treatment and catalysis. This article furnishes an overview on synthesis, properties, and environmental application of Fe-based Perovskite.
