We will review some of the major results in random graphs and some of the more challenging open problems. We will cover algorithmic and structural questions. We will touch on newer models, including those related to the WWW.

Introduction to linear and nonlinear programming

Initial-value ordinary differential equation solution via variable order Adams method (SIVA/DIVA) package is collection of subroutines for solution of nonstiff ordinary differential equations. There are versions for single-precision and double-precision arithmetic. Requires fewer evaluations of derivatives than other variable-order Adams predictor/ corrector methods. Option for direct integration of second-order equations makes integration of trajectory problems significantly more efficient. Written in FORTRAN 77.

The 22nd European Conference on Operational Research EURO2007 took place in Prague, Czech Republic, organised by the Czech Society of Operational Research and the University of Economics in Prague. The conference participants were researchers, academicians, and practitioners interested in operational research, mathematical modelling and quantitative economic analysis. The number of participants was higher than 2,000 persons form various countries of the world, making the Prague conference the largest EURO conference ever. The high number of conference participants is a sign promising that Operations Research (OR) is an attractive scientific discipline with many new theoretical developments and practical applications. In 2005, a special issue of the Central European Journal of Operations Research has been devoted to quantitative decision support for health care (cf. CEJOR 2005). This special issue is devoted to innovative approaches for decision analysis in energy, health, and life sciences. One may ask what these different topics have in common? The answer is that they represent key major challenging application fields for researchers that containmanymeasurement, definition, and interpretation problems which are complicated by dynamic and stochastic structure of the studied systems.

IT-based decision support is in the heart of business intelligence. It should be based on a successful integration of data analysis techniques and certain system engineering (like system dynamics) concepts. This contribution introduces in the large realm of IT-based decision support and its meaning for a modern business strategy. Central is the relationship to Business Intelligence with its own characteristics and requirements. The relevant data mining techniques are summarized and characterized by its special role within traditional business intelligence approaches.

Adaptive Business Intelligence: The Integration of Data Mining and Systems Engineering into an Advanced Decision Support as an Integral Part of the Business Strategy

study RiKoV deals with mitigating risks of a terrorist attack against the German public railway system. The research method and first results will be presented and discussed in this paper. In the project, a scenario-based risk assessment method was developed tailored to intelligent, rationally acting attackers. We consider risk as a function of the system’s vulnerability, the threat to the system, and the consequences of an attack. In particular, we apply three complementary ways to deal with the problem of fundamental uncertainty with respect to the terrorists’ motivation. In a first approach, the input parameters “intention” and “capability” are regarded as fuzzy parameters which are measured in qualitative categories. The second approach is the derivation of optimal rules in a multi-criteria framework for decisions under uncertainty. Finally, we complement our elaborated risk analysis with game-theoretic arguments.

Optimizing security vis-à-vis terrorist attacks. An application for public rail transport systems

Knowledge and experience play an important role in the successful application of operational analysis. But how can knowledge be saved and shared in a large organization? How can different viewpoints on the data be supported? Another challenge is to foster communication and cooperation between analysts. This is especially important for distributed teams such as deployed operational analysists and their reach-back components. We present a concept that emphasizes connections between stored information and enables a fast and comfortable retrievement of the data. Furthermore, security concerns can be addressed. The innovative concept was implemented as a prototype using the open-source content management framework Drupal for a govermental organization but can be easily transferred to other areas -- for instance organizations working in humanitarian logistics.
