The book is well documented and provides useful tools for the hedth care professional in rhe Appendix. The book contains much information that at times seems too dry when juxtaposed with the interesting case study. Although not a history per se, it does provide an extensive literature review of dfirent academic disciplines' ethnographic studies on health care beliefs. O'Connor's book should become essential reading for all researchers, teachers, and students of ethnography, culturd diversity, vexnacdar health a r e beliefs, and health G a t e systems. Those in the community health arena especially will appreciate its applicability and usefulness. O'Connor's work expands our intellectual horiwns and promotes better, more culturally aware attitudes, values, and beliefs among health care providers.

While research on gender in organizations has not only documented sustained gender inequality, it has also offered an understanding of how gender is enacted through doing and undoing gender An underexplored aspect concerns how men can do and undo gender to support or hinder gender equality processes in organizations Doing gender is then understood as creating gender difference while undoing gender would conversely mean to reduce gender difference The former is supporting gender inequality while the latter means moving toward gender equality This article therefore provides a systematic review of empirical articles that discuss how men are doing and undoing gender within an organizational context It is shown that undoing gender practices of men in organizations are under-researched and a research agenda of how men can undo gender at work is thus developed This article makes a two-fold contribution: first it offers a refinement of doing and undoing gender approaches and second, it develops a research agenda for exploring how men can undo gender at work

Men Doing and Undoing Gender at Work: A Review and Research Agenda

Men in early childhood education (ECE) are subjected to different discourses: while they are facing serious mistrust on the one hand, their otherness to the field is also interpreted as new and potentially innovative on the other hand. This article explores how male childcare workers create and take up different subject positions by drawing on these competing discourses in order to acquire a legitimate position as men in the female-dominated context of Swiss day-care centers. In constructing themselves as professionals they create a subject position that seems to move beyond the gender binary. Analysing the position of the professional in depth, the article first shows how this position is accomplished and then explores how gender unfolds between the lines by infusing professionalism with masculinity.

Doing gender and professionalism: Exploring the intersectionalities of gender and professionalization in early childhood education

Social work is one of several professions closely associated with caring and femininity, and, as a result, often suggested as a non-traditional occupational choice for a man Men’s generally poorer educational experience becomes more prominent when studying a subject associated with femininity such as social work (Severiens and ten Dam 2012) Men have more progression issues than women on English university social work courses (Hussein et al 2008; Schaub 2015), and our understanding of how men experience social work education is limited This thesis examines in-depth men social work students’ experience and progression, in order to determine the underlying reasons for men’s poorer progression Twenty-one social work student men from seven English universities were interviewed using qualitative methods The study found participants described a complex, layered set of experiential and progression challenges that are specific to men These impediments appear to combine, for some men, with other non-gender specific difficulties, thereby increasing the likelihood of failure or withdrawal Some men are able to manage these issues, but others find them more challenging, suggesting some men experience a cycle of academic struggle and disengagement closely linked to their identity as men training to become social workers In order to understand their experience, several theoretical strands were applied Theories of stigma, masculinities and student retention were used to provide explanations for the challenges found for the men interviewed In addition to providing a voice for men social work students, this study makes recommendations for social work educators and programmes to support men to more successfully complete social work courses

Making sense of men's experiences and progression through social work programmes

As childcare workers, men are in a contested position. On the one hand, they are in danger of being depicted as the pedophile; on the other hand, they are expected to bring something new and innovative to the thus-far female-dominated field. These men are experiencing ‘identity dissonance’ and have to find ways to manage and facilitate legitimate subject positions as both childcare workers and as men. Applying a perspective of discursive positioning, this article discusses men's positioning practices in nine qualitative interviews conducted with male childcare workers in German-speaking Switzerland. We identified a total of six discursive practices that men engage in to manage identity dissonance and construct a legitimate subject position. We found that men are engaging in a greater variety of practices than have been discussed so far. Aufgrund eines defizitären Menschenbildes machen Menschen mit Beeinträchtigungen bis heute oftmals die Erfahrung, diskriminiert und ausgegrenzt zu werden. Aus diesem Grund sind die Sichtbarmachung und Anerkennung der Beiträge von Menschen mit Beeinträchtigungen für das gesellschaftliche Zusammenleben von zentraler Relevanz. Dies ist auch in Artikel 8 der UN-BRK festgehalten. Darin werden die Vertragsstaaten verpflichtet, das Bewusstsein für den Beitrag von Menschen mit Beeinträchtigungen zu fördern.
