This epic history compares the empires built by Spain and Britain in the Americas, from Columbus's arrival in the New World to the end of Spanish colonial rule in the early nineteenth century. J. H. Elliott, one of the most distinguished and versatile historians working today, offers us history on a grand scale, contrasting the worlds built by Britain and by Spain on the ruins of the civilizations they encountered and destroyed in North and South America. Elliott identifies and explains both the similarities and differences in the two empires' processes of colonization, the character of their colonial societies, their distinctive styles of imperial government, and the independence movements mounted against them. Based on wide reading in the history of the two great Atlantic civilizations, the book sets the Spanish and British colonial empires in the context of their own times and offers us insights into aspects of this dual history that still influence the Americas.

rom a philosophical point of view, globalization might be compared with what Heidegger called “the gigantic” (das Riesige). For among the characteristics of the gigantic as he understood it were both the elimination of great distances and the representation—producible at any time—of daily life in unfamiliar and distant worlds. But the gigantic was for him above all that through which the quantitative became an essential quality. From this point of view, the time of the gigantic was that in which “the world posits itself in a space beyond representation, thus allocating to the incalculable its own determination and unique historical character.”1 If at the center of the discussion on globalization we place the three problems of spatiality, calculability, and temporality in their relations with representation, we find ourselves brought back to two points usually ignored in contemporary discourses, even though Fernand Braudel had called attention to them. The first of these has to do with temporal pluralities, and, we might add, with the subjectivity that makes these temporalities possible and meaningful. Odor and Power in the Americas: Olfactory Consciousness from Columbus to Emancipation

Stimulated by recent high-profile incidents, concerns about business ethics have increased over the last decade. In response, research has focused on developing theoretical and empirical frameworks to understand ethical decision making. So far, empirical studies have used traditional quantitative tools, such as regression or multiple discriminant analysis (MDA), in ethics research. More advanced tools are needed. In this exploratory research, a new approach to classifying, categorizing and analyzing ethical decision situations is presented. A comparative performance analysis of artificial neural networks, MDA and chance showed that artificial neural networks predict better in both training and testing phases. While some limitations of this approach were noted, in the field of business ethics, such networks are promising as an alternative to traditional analytic tools like MDA.

Daniel Boone was 18th-century America's backwoodsman. American Confluence: The Missouri Frontier from Borderland to Border State

On the hundredth anniversary of Frederick Jackson Turner's paper on "The Significance of the Frontier in American History:' Turner-busting has superseded Turner-bussing as the lingua franca of western American historiography. Early in the twentieth century, Turner's thesis energized the study not simply of the winning of the West, but of the whole of American history. Building on Turner's vision, his many disciples formulated the history of the "West"' which was used synonymously with the frontier, as the history of America. After Turner's death in 1932, however, a new generation of historians exposed the imprecisions, simplifications, overgeneralizations, contradictions, exclusions, and outright errors of the frontier thesis. The assaults robbed the frontier of much of its intellectual vitality, of its role in Americanizing Europeans and in democratizing Americans. For a time, western historians, lacking an alternative paradigm to give meaning to their field, lagged in the attack on Turner and his thesis.
