The present invention generally relates to a method and system for determining the position and alignment of a plane in relation to an intersecting axis and using that known position and alignment to allow for corrections to be made when using the plane as a reference plane. More particularly, the invention relates to a method and system for determining the angle of tilt of a planar surface in relation to a laser beam, and using the determined angle of tilt to calculate a correction factor to be applied to the laser beam. Briefly stated, the method and system ultimately calculates a correction factor, z-offset, that is applied when using the laser beam in a procedure.

An optical depolarizer and method of depolarizing light is described. An input light beam is split into two beams. One split beam is recirculated through a birefringent medium and looped back to be recombined with the input light. This allows a weighted averaging of the different polarization states that result from birefringence in the recirculation path of the recirculated beam. The depolarizer is formed from single mode fiber optic cables and fused single mode fiber couplers. Each fiber coupler has an input pair of fibers and an output pair of fibers. One of the output fibers is coupled to one of the input fibers to form a recirculation loop. Additionally, polarization controllers provided in the input fiber and recirculation loop allow the degree of polarization of the output beam to be varied across a wide spectrum of values.

A coherent radiation imaging system that produces digital images with a reduced amount of speckle. Radiation from a long coherence length source is used to form an image of a sample. The output coherent wave is temporally divided into a plurality of wavelets. The spatial phase of each wavelet is then modulated a known and different amount. Each phase modulated wavelet illuminates the sample and is perturbed by its interaction with the sample. A spatial phase map of each perturbed wavelet is then created and converted to a sample image with an image reconstruction program. The plurality of sample images thus formed is statistically averaged to form a final averaged image. The high frequency speckle that is not optically resolvable tends to average to zero with continual statistical averaging, leaving only the optically resolvable lower frequency phase information.

A split-path point-diffraction interferometer (SPPDI) comprising separate signal and reference beam paths is disclosed. A beamsplitter is used to divide a linearly polarized converging incident signal beam into separate signal and reference beam paths prior to focus. The reference beam path comprises a diffracting aperture located at the focal point of the signal beam. The diffracting aperture in the reference beam path produces an expanding, diffraction-limited reference wavefront. The signal and reference beam paths comprise linear polarizers whose yaw, pitch, and roll orientation may be freely adjusted. Yaw and pitch adjustment of one or more linear polarizers provides for adjustment of fringe spacing and orientation. Roll adjustment of one or more linear polarizers provides for adjustment of fringe contrast and intensity. Beam turning mirrors are used to direct the signal and reference beams to a beam combiner. Polarizing analysers are placed in the combined output beams produced by the beam combiner. A double-pass embodiment of an SPPDI comprising a beam splitter and compact laser source is disclosed.
