Systems and methods for returning results of services within a distributed computing environment are provided. After a client invokes one or more functions of a service, results of the function(s) may be returned to the client in a plurality of ways: for example, in a message, in a space (e.g., a network-addressable storage location), in a space wherein the client is notified via an event, using an advertisement returned in a message, using an advertisement returned in a space, and using an advertisement returned in a space wherein the client is notified via an event. The advertisement may include the information necessary to access and read the results in a storage location such as a space. A schema for the service may specify a plurality of messages which are usable to invoke the function(s) of the service. The messages, results, and advertisements may be expressed in a platform-independent and/or programming-language-independent data representation language such as XML. The availability of these plurality of methods may enhance the flexibility and adaptability of the distributed computing environment for a variety of situations, such as for clients having differing capabilities. For additional flexibility, results may also be efficiently passed to another service.

A data processing system stores information in tuple space as tuples that are accessible by multiple entities. Methods, apparatus, computer-readable media, and data structures provide efficient extensions to tuple space coordination languages for example Linda, that increase concurrency by lessening tuple removal, without requiring compile time analysis, altering existing primitives, or adding new primitives. Traces are used to analyze tuple space access in distributed systems, resulting in optimizations based upon certain conditions which, if met, enable a tuple to remain visible in tuple space without blocking, so that other processes can continue to read the tuple while a first process is updating the tuple. A run-time optimization modifies the conditions if the execution is in a closed system that is known not to intentionally contain deadlock, further improving performance.

Methods and apparatus for tuple management in data processing system

A widely-used data definition language such as the Extensible Markup Language is used to implement a tuple space-based coordination mechanism. Entries and template entries can represent any type of networked or network-proxied resource, object or service. Using this framework, diverse entry spaces can be aggregated and operated upon as though they were a single large entry space. The flexibility and power of XML constructs can be leveraged to make such aggregation straightforward and efficient.

A method, apparatus, and article of manufacture for exchanging information in a computer-implemented database system. The present invention implements this exchange using a new operator known as a Rhonda operator. A Rhonda operator includes a tuple and template as arguments and, when performed, atomically swaps its tuple with a tuple from another Rhonda operator when both their templates match. More specifically, if two processes perform Rhonda operations, and each process' template argument matches the other process' tuple argument, then each process receives the other process' tuple as a result. This atomic synchronization can be performed for two or more Rhonda operators at a time.
