A packet-based, hierarchical communication system, arranged in a spanning tree configuration, is described in which wired and wireless communication networks exhibiting substantially different characteristics are employed in an overall scheme to link portable or mobile computing devices. The network accommodates real time voice transmission both through dedicated, scheduled bandwidth and through a packet-based routing within the confines and constraints of a data network. Conversion and call processing circuitry is also disclosed which enables access devices and personal computers to adapt voice information between analog voice stream and digital voice packet formats as proves necessary. Routing pathways include wireless spanning tree networks, wide area networks, telephone switching networks, internet, etc., in a manner virtually transparent to the user. A voice session and associate call setup simulates that of conventional telephone switching network, providing well-understood functionality common to any mobile, remote or stationary terminal, phone, computer, etc.

In a method for use in recognizing continuous speech, signals are accepted corresponding to interspersed speech elements including text elements corresponding to text to be recognized and command elements corresponding to commands to be executed. The elements are recognized. The recognized elements are acted on in a manner which depends on whether they represent text or commands.

The method comprises performing full word-level recognition of the speech including recognition of silent pauses and filled pauses, suppressing playback of the filled pauses and silent pauses, alerting a listener of the audio recording to locations of suppressed filled pauses and silent pauses during playback of the audio recording, and accepting a user command to disable suppression of any filled pause or silent pause during playback of the audio recording.

A record/playback device for use with a removable, interchangeable, flash memory recording medium which enables extended recording comparable with tape cassette dictating equipment. The device includes a housing, a microphone element, control circuitry and a switch mounted on the housing for selecting desired functional operations. A receiving socket is coupled to memory circuitry associated with the control circuitry and is configured for electrical coupling with a flash memory module adapted for receiving and retaining recorded digital information for storage in nonvolatile forme.

A digital memory device is provided for recording the detected audio signal in compressed form on the time axis. An improved driver interface circuit for interfacing between low voltage, low drive capability logic signals and large capacitive loads requiring high speed, high voltage logic signals. The improvement comprising the use of the logic input signal to power gate a high level buffer contained in the driver and thereby minimize the power consumption during inactive periods.
