TL;DR: In this article, the authors identify a number of such substitutes for leadership, presents scales of questionnaire items for their measurement, and reports some preliminary tests, concluding that these substitutes act as "substitutes for leadership" negating the hierarchical superior's ability to exert either positive or negative influence over subordinate attitudes and effectiveness.

TL;DR: In this paper, the authors reviewed the literature on first-line supervisors to gain an under-understanding of their position and found that there has been a significant loss of autonomy as external influences have eroded firstline supervisory power, and the likely impacts of participative management, increased use of autonomous work groups, use of computers in management, and influence of staff specialists.

Effects of Different Leader Behaviors under Different Levels of Task Interdependence
TL;DR: In this article, the authors developed and tested three hypotheses relating the moderating effects of interdependence between leader behaviors and satisfaction and performance, and found strong support for the performance hypotheses, but not for the satisfaction hypotheses.
