The impact of innovation activities on firm performance using a multi-stage model: Evidence from the Community Innovation Survey 4

The present study provides some empirical evidence for the export spillover effect examining the case of an emerging market economy, namely India, using firm level data for the period 1994-2006. We disentangle different spillover channels, namely the demonstration effect, the imitation effect (R&D spillover) and a proxy to measure spillover effects coming from higher MNEs’ skills. We also account for the heterogeneous technological behaviour of local firms considering how in-house R&D efforts and disembodied technological imports may affect the exporting performance. Our findings show how export spillover effects are mainly mediated by an imitation effect, contrary to the case of other emerging market economies like China, where a demonstration effect is evident. We also recognise that both the decision to export and export intensity are influenced most of all by the technological activities of local firms. Moreover, the findings of the analysis suggest that in-house R&D is more relevant than other external sources of technological knowledge such as disembodied technology imports to internalise the positive spillover effect emanating from MNEs.

MNEs, Technological Efforts and Channels of Export Spillover: An Analysis of Indian Manufacturing Industries

The spatial distribution of FDI is highly concentrated in India. This study analyses how the collocation of investors from the same country and same industry contributes to the spatial concentration of FDI. Based on the country of origin and industry sector, we categorise the greenfield investments into four categories: investors from the same countries and the same industry, same country and different industry, different countries and same industry and investors from different countries and different industries and analyse its role on FDI agglomeration. Our empirical analysis finds prior investment has a key role in the location choice of new investments. Further, the country of origin and industry sector of prior investments is associated with the location choice of new investors which leads to the FDI agglomeration in that region.

Patterns of Labour Market Insecurity in Rural India: A Multidimensional and Multivariate Analysis

India’s low carbon inclusive growth strategy is framed in the context of multiple goals and its national circumstances. In many cases, co-benefits such as energy security, universal access to clean energy at affordable prices, decentralized development, employment generation and improvements in local environmental quality are important. Therefore, the weights for GHG emissions reductions and other goals vary from sector to sector and sometimes among schemes within a sector. For this reason India has opted for bottom-up /sectoral / programme-oriented policies rather than economy-wide GHG emissions reduction policies such as carbon taxation or cap and trade system. India has taken initiatives to enhance energy efficiency in thermal power plants, promote nuclear power and renewable energy and tap energy savings potentials in a few sectors. However, there is heavy reliance on technology development, regulation and subsidies than on use of economic instruments. This paper examines the present policies in the light of the inclusive growth objective and financial and environmental sustainability.

India's Low Carbon Inclusive Growth Strategy

We analyze the role of digital infrastructure in shaping the global value chain (GVC) participation of Indian manufacturing firms. To examine the digitalization and GVC nexus, a rich, firm-level, unbalanced panel of 4875 manufacturing firms from the past two decades is used to detail the rising significance of digital infrastructure in the Indian context and then to examine empirically the relationship between digitalization and GVCs. Employing a logit model, we observe a positive and significant association of digitalization on firms’ GVC participation. Further, subsample results highlight that digitalization promotes the integration of small firms and firms from low-technology industries into the GVC. Moreover, the findings of our analysis are robust to alternate measures of GVCs.
