Drought stress results in significant crop yield losses. Comparative transcriptome analysis between tolerant and sensitive species can provide insights into drought tolerance mechanisms in jute. We present a comprehensive study on drought tolerance in two jute species—a drought tolerant species (Corchorus olitorius L., GF) and a drought sensitive species (Corchorus capsularis L., YY). In total, 45,831 non-redundant unigenes with average sequence length of 1421 bp were identified. Higher numbers of differentially expressed genes (DEGs) were discovered in YY (794) than in GF (39), implying that YY was relatively more vulnerable or hyper-responsive to drought stress at the molecular level; the two main pathways, phenylpropanoid biosynthesis and peroxisome pathway, significantly involved in scavenging of reactive oxygen species (ROS) and 14 unigenes in the two pathways presented a significant differential expression in response to increase of superoxide. Our classification analysis showed that 1769 transcription factors can be grouped into 81 families and 948 protein kinases (PKs) into 122 families. In YY, we identified 34 TF DEGs from and 23 PK DEGs, including 19 receptor-like kinases (RLKs). Most of these RLKs were downregulated during drought stress, implying their role as negative regulators of the drought tolerance mechanism in jute.

Thirty eight genotypes of bread wheat (Triticum aestivum L) collected from DWR, Karnal, Haryana were evaluated in Randomized Block Design with three replications at the Teaching Farm of the Bidhan Chandra Krishi Viswavidyalaya in 2008–09 crop season Observations for eighteen different yield contributing characters viz, plant height, days to heading, flowering, maturity, tiller number per plant, length of spike, number of spikes per plant, and per meter square, number of spikelets per spike, number of grains per spike, grain weight per spike, chlorophyll-a, b and total chlorophyll content, thousand grain weight, grain protein content, yield per plant and grain weight per meter square were recorded The genotypes exhibited significant variation for all the characters studied The estimate of PCV in all the traits studied were greater than those of the GCV, The close proximity between PCV and GCV values for most of the characters indicated less influence of environment on the expression of the characters under study Considering heritability, most of the characters showed high values High heritability coupled with high genetic advance (in % of mean) were recorded for the grain weight per spike, per plant and per meter square, number of grains per spike, thousand grain weight and the grain protein content indicating the characters to be under additive genetic control and also scope of improvement through direct selection

Estimation of variability for yield parameters in Bread Wheat (Triticum aestivum L.) grown in Gangetic West Bengal

Paucity of research on the development of tomato hybrid having desirable post harvest/or processing quality in the tropics compel to undertake this study. Therefore, the present investigation was undertaken to identify potential donors and crosses, to study the extent of heterosis and dominance behaviour, and to ascertain the genetic control of fifteen yield components and post harvest quality traits through line x tester mating design in tomato. Non-additive gene action controlled all characters studied, suggesting heterosis breeding for their improvement. Among parental lines, CLN2777-Gâ€™ and â€˜FEB-2â€™ were the best general combiners for yield and processing traits and could be utilized further in tomato breeding programme. Crosses (â€˜CLN2768-A x A.C.AFTâ€™ and â€˜CLN2777-G x FEB-2â€™) showing high specific combining ability and yield involved parents showing high general combining ability for fruit yield per plant and other horticultural traits. All 9 F1 hybrids had significantly higher number of fruits per cluster and number of fruits per cluster over both mid-and better-parental values, while for the other traits, hybrids expressed average heterosis in both directions. The maximum extent of heterobeltiosis (53.56%) was found in lycopene content of fruit followed by number of fruits per cluster (32.59%) and fruit yield per plant (31.77%). The performances of the hybrids illustrated the presence of various degrees of dominance effects i.e., partial to overdominance /or no dominance. We could able to improve processing quality in spite of yield in the cross (â€˜CLN2777-G x FEB-2â€™) which can substantially make a dent for processing industry in the tropics.

Heterosis, dominance estimate and genetic control of yield and post harvest quality traits of tomato

The genetic variability, heritability, genetic advance, correlation coefficient and path analysis were estimated for yield and its attributing traits in thirty genotypes of tossa jute (Corchorus olitorius L.). The analysis of variance showed significant differences among the genotypes for all the characters. The highest genotypic variance was for plant height (680.97) followed by green weight (123.59), stick weight (49.33), days to 50% flowering (12.05), fibre weight (1.31), base diameter (0.02) and the lowest genotypic variance was that of bark thickness (0.03). High values of heritability(>90%) were recorded for almost all characters like plant height (93.01%), bark thickness(98.33%), base diameter(94.82%), green weight (91.64%), stick weight (99.20%) and fibre weight ( 96.48%). The high heritability with moderate to high genetic advance over percentage of mean was observed in bark thickness (98.33%, 38.86), stick weight (99.20%, 56.87) and fibre weight (96.48%, 25.02) which indicate preponderance of additive genetic action. Therefore, effective selection would be made considering the stick weight, bark thickness, green weight, plant height and base diameter per plant to produce jute varieties with acceptable yield.
