This research explored the implementations and perceptions of the Resource Description and Access (RDA) cataloguing standard in Europe. It refers to the development and implementation of the standard among Anglo-American libraries and draws comparisons between them. It examines the spread and application of RDA throughout Europe both by analysing the available literature and by conducting interviews with professionals at 12 European national libraries. The results highlight the issues faced by the European institutions and the unique perspectives that emerge from implementing RDA in different languages and cultures. European institutions demonstrate a higher level of involvement and interest in the development of RDA and a stronger desire to work towards RDA interoperability and alignment with the cultural heritage sector. The European implementation drives forward the internationalisation of RDA by actively seeking solutions to the issues in the new standard arising from the cultural and linguistic diversity.

This survey sought to investigate how the transition to the new cataloging standard, Resource Description and Access (RDA), has been handled in one hundred of the largest US public libraries, specifically examining whether catalogers believe that some of RDA’s major goals have been met, and how some of the anticipated impacts of RDA implementation have been handled. A large majority of these libraries have implemented RDA for original cataloging, but respondents also generally believe that RDA has failed to meet some of its most important goals, primarily ease of use and cost-effectiveness.

RDA Implementation in Large US Public Libraries

The new cataloging standard, Resource, Description, and Access, has forced many libraries to rethink how metadata is displayed and accessed. Although Resource, Description, and Access implementation may seem daunting at first, especially for small libraries with shrinking staff and budgets, implementation provides an excellent opportunity to re-evaluate legacy workflows and work collaboratively as a group to develop policies and procedures that will ultimately help the library become more responsive to change. In this article the author examines these challenges in a small academic library and how to overcome them with training, practice, and time. Both general and specific guidelines are discussed for Resource, Description, and Access implementation in the small academic library.

Implementing Resource, Description, and Access in a time of change in the small academic library

EnglishInformation organization as a core component of library and information science consists of many technical processes related to information resources and objects. These processes are mainly shaped by technological developments and user expectations. Conceptual models and standards are also detrimental factors for these processes. In this regard, many awareness raising activities and scientific events related to RDA transition have been carried out in Turkey since 2012. Libraries independently implement RDA rules in their catalogues in Turkey because of the copy cataloguing approaches, attempts to create new collections in new founded universities and efforts for providing user-centred environments. It is detected that there are 10 libraries using RDA rules for their information resource description processes. In the light of this information, this study aims to examine the perspectives of libraries which implement RDA rules in Turkey. Accordingly, a structured interview form containing ten open-ended questions was flourished with the aim of gathering qualitative data. In order to obtain deeper results interviews were carried out with cataloguing experts and decision makers in these processes. Results exposes that the current situation of Turkish libraries in RDA implementation, experienced difficulties and their perspectives related to transition process in Turkey. A questo proposito, dal 2012 in Turchia sono state effettuate numerose attivita ed eventi scientifici di sensibilizzazione relativi alla transizione di RDA. Le biblioteche in Turchia applicano autonomamente le norme RDA nei loro cataloghi per via delle strategie di catalogazione derivata, dei tentativi di creare nuove collezioni nelle universita appena fondate e degli impegni per organizzare ambienti incentrati sull’utenza. E stato rilevato che 10 biblioteche utilizzano RDA per le loro metodologie descrittive delle risorse informative. Alla luce di tali informazioni, questa indagine mira a esaminare le prospettive delle biblioteche che applicano RDA in Turchia. Era percio stato realizzato un questionario strutturato contenente 10 domande a risposta aperta con l’obiettivo di raccogliere dati qualitativi. Al fine di ottenere risultati piu approfonditi, sono state inoltre condotte interviste con esperti di catalogazione e con i decision maker in questi processi. I risultati mostrano l’attuale situazione delle biblioteche turche nell’applicazione di RDA, le difficolta incontrate e le loro prospettive in relazione al processo di transizione in Turchia. Con una valutazione originale, questo studio e il primo che mostra le prospettive e le esperienze delle biblioteche turche che utilizzano le regole RDA.

RDA Transition in Turkey: Perspectives and Experiences of the Libraries

This study surveyed the current state of knowledge about, and application or use of, Resource Description and Access (RDA) among American public library catalogers. In 2017, an online survey request was e-mailed to four thousand libraries for the person or persons most responsible for cataloging to complete the questionnaire. More than three hundred libraries responded. The data expose serious concerns with RDA adoption within the public library sector. While a majority of catalogers know about RDA, their working knowledge about it differs substantially depending on whether they work in rural or urban library settings. Regardless, 22 percent of respondants still had not heard of the RDA standard until completing this survey. While further training and educational opportunities (along with funds) for catalogers nationwide would help minimize this disparity, LIS schools also can play a role by educating more thoroughly the next generations of catalogers in this newer descriptive standard. Coming on the brink of a shift in the theoretical framework of the RDA standard, from the Functional Requirements for Bibliographic Records (FRBR) model to the IFLA Library Reference Model (LRM), public library catalogers risk falling even farther behind in their knowledge and competency with the RDA standard.

Resource Description and Access Adoption and Implementation in Public Libraries in the United States

This article describes the progress made toward implementing Resource Description and Access (RDA) in libraries across Canada, as of Fall 2013. Differences in the training experiences in the English-speaking cataloging communities and French-speaking cataloging communities are discussed. Preliminary results of a survey of implementation in English-Canadian libraries are included as well as a summary of the support provided for French-Canadian libraries. Data analysis includes an examination of the rate of adoption in Canada by region and by sector. Challenges in RDA training delivery in a Canadian context are identified, as well as opportunities for improvement and expansion of RDA training in the future.
