Processes for the production of fluorinated organic compounds and fluorinating agents

New processes for the preparation of 2-iodo-perfluoro-2-methyl-butane and the corresponding -pentane are described. In one process, perfluoro-2-methyl-2-butene or the corresponding -pentene is reacted in an amount of at least 5 mol with a mixture of 2 mol of iodine and 1 mol of iodine pentafluoride in the presence of more than 1 mol of at least one fluoride of a metal of group I of the periodic table of the elements under the autogenous pressure of the reaction mixture at 170° to 220° C. for 2 to 30 hours. In another process, the same perfluoroolefins are reacted, as the starting substances, with iodine and an alkali metal fluoride in the presence of at least 1 mol of a soluble silver salt per mole of the perfluorinated olefin at 20° to 100° C. for 0.5 to 10 hours. After working up by distillation, the pure iodoperfluoroalkanes are obtained. They are suitable for numerous reactions, but in particular as a packing for lasers.

Production of perfluoroalkyl iodide

PURPOSE:To obtain the titled compound safely and advantageously in high yield with effectively suppressed side reactions in reacting iodine with iodine pentafluoride and a perfluoroolefin, by using phosphorus or a compound thereof as a catalyst. CONSTITUTION:Iodine is reacted with iodine pentafluoride and a perfluoroolefin as raw materials in the presence of phosphorus as a catalyst preferably in the presence of a diluent usually at about 0-150 deg.C, preferably about 40-80 deg.C, under ordinary or higher pressure to give the aimed compound. A 2-3C fluoroolefin, e.g. tetrafluoroethylene or hexafluoropropylene, is preferred for the above- mentioned perfluoroolefin. The amount of the catalyst to be used is about 0.01- 0.5mol, preferably about 0.05-0.2mol, based on 1mol iodine pentafluoride. Sulfur hexafluoride, etc. may be cited as the diluent, and the amount thereof to be used is preferably 0.01-0.1 of the weight of the iodine pentafluoride.

PURPOSE:To prepare the titled compound useful as an intermediate of an emulsifier for the plymerization of fluoroolefins, etc., economically in an industrial scale, by oxidizing a perfluoroalkyl iodide with an oxidizing agent in the presence of phosphours, molybdenum and/or tin catalyst. CONSTITUTION:The perfluoroalkylcarboxylic acid fluoride of formula R'fCOF (R'f is 1-16C perfluoroalkyl) is prepared by oxidizing the perfluoroalkyl iodide of formula RfI(Rf is 2-17C perfluoroalkyl) with an oxidizing agent such as sulfuric anhydride, fuming sulfuric acid having SO3-contnet of about 10-60wt%, etc. in the presence of a catalyst selected from the elemental phosphorus, molybdemun or tin or their compounds such as chloride, oxychloride, oxide, sulfide, sulfate, etc. The oxidation reaction proceeds at a low temperature using even a small amount of catalyst, and the objective compound can be obtained in high yield.
