In the past half century, the research on emotions of foreign language learners (FLL) has shifted the focus from an exclusive analysis of negative emotions to a more holistic study of both negative emotions and positive emotions, and currently to mediators of multiple emotions. Of the FLL’s negative emotions, foreign language anxiety (FLA) attracts the most attention. Researchers have widely discussed the relationship between FLA and foreign language achievement, the influencing factors of FLA, the dynamicity of FLA as well as regulation and intervention strategies of FLA. Foreign language enjoyment (FLE) is the most heavily studied research subject on FLL’s positive emotions. Researchers generally focus on the influencing factors of FLE, the dynamicity of FLE and the relationship between FLE and FLA. With the implementation of holistic education, emotional intelligence (EI), a mediator of multiple emotions of FLL, has been becoming a newly hot topic in the field of FLL’s emotions. By reviewing the previous studies, this paper proposes that the future research on FLL emotion needs to expand the research perspectives, enrich the research topics, and innovate the research methods.

A Review of Foreign Language Learners’ Emotions

As one trend of education reform, more attentions have been paid on operative experiments than mental ones, and virtual simulation experiment has achieved pleasant progresses in China since the Ministry of Education advocated in 2013, which applied new IT technologies to improve the teaching effect of high-risk or high-cost experiments. In this paper, situational teaching is introduced into the design of virtual simulation experiment of software development courses. The construction of a virtual environment rather than the simulation of the high-risk equipment is discussed and the students’ comprehensive application of various related knowledge in the virtual experimental environment is analyzed. Based on situational cognitive psychology, this paper describes the situation of virtual experiment as a triplet, puts forward the design mode of virtual simulation experiment from the perspective of situational teaching, and builds the architecture of virtual simulation experiment from the sight of computer system. Taking the requirement analysis experiment as an example, the design scheme of virtual simulation experiment is explained in detail.

Virtual Simulation Experiment Scheme for Software Development Courses Based on Situational Teaching

ABSTRACT In this article, we analyse the response of UK academics to the UK government decision to cut international development research funding as part of the overseas aid budget reduction, undertaken in March 2021. This decision affects and will have long-lasting effects on any research project involving the UK and international partners, particularly in Global South contexts. We use Critical Metaphor Analysis (CMA) to analyse news, blogs, interviews that UK-based academics wrote in response to the cuts announcement, from 11 March 2021 to 30 April 2021. We identified the following metaphors: CUTS ARE AN ENTITY; CUTS ARE A THREAT, CUTS ARE ILLNESS, CUTS ARE VIOLENCE; plus, on the other hand, RESEARCH IS HEALTH, RESEARCH IS A JOURNEY, RESEARCH IS CONNECTION. UK academics have used ‘idioms of distress’, which are cultural expressions, often metaphorical, through which people articulate distress. Therefore, our contribution is threefold. First, we suggest that the metaphors used have a persuasive and evaluative aim and function. Second, we open up a space for an interdisciplinarity between CMA and ‘idioms of distress’. Third, we warn about the need for the UK government and responsible institutional bodies to restore communication and trust with the global academic research community in International Development.

Cuts destroy, hurt, kill: a critical metaphor analysis of the response of UK academics to the UK overseas aid budget funding cuts

The primary purpose of this research is to explore the value of quality dimensions of accounting information systems (AIS) success, as represented by system quality (SQ), information quality (IQ) and service quality (SVQ), on the effectiveness of management during financial crises. This paper highlights the mediation role of system usage (SU) in those associations in the context of a government ministry. Descriptive analytical and quantitative approaches were adopted, using a questionnaire as the data collection instrument and selecting employees of the Palestinian Ministry of Finance as a population sample for the research. A total of 141 questionnaires were distributed, of which 105 were valid for statistical analysis. In the data analysis, the partial least squares (PLS) and structural equation modelling (SEM) techniques were adopted using SmartPLS software. The results indicate a direct significant effect between SQ, IQ, SVQ, and managing during financial crises in the research context. The mediation of SU in the influence between IQ, SQ, and managing during financial crises in the governmental context is clear. Conversely, this mediation was not demonstrated in the effect of SVQ. The research emphasizes the necessity of adopting high-quality AIS in terms of SQ, IQ and SVQ because of their critical role in enhancing management effectiveness during a financial crisis. The advancement and wider employment of AIS that have high-quality characteristics can improve management tasks during a financial crisis, increasing the ability to contain the crisis and reduce its broader repercussions.

The Impact of Quality Dimensions of Accounting Information System Success on the Effectiveness of During-Financial Crisis Management: The Mediating Role of System Usage in a Government Sector Context

The current study was conducted to investigate the relationship between foreign language anxiety (FLA) and attitudes towards English. A total 518 Turkish students studying at private and state high schools participated in the study.  Quantitative research design was adopted in the present study. Foreign Language Classroom Anxiety Scale (FLCAS) and Attitudes towards English Scale were used as data collection tools. In order to analyze data, SPSS 23 software was used, and Multivariate Analysis of Variance (MANOVA) and correlation statistics were utilized. According to data analysis results, the study revealed that students’ FLA levels were at moderate level and they had negative attitudes towards English. The results of data analysis also indicated that there was a negative strong relationship between students’ FLA levels and their attitudes towards English. Although gender had a significant impact on students’ anxiety levels, grade levels of students were not seen as a factor strongly related to FLA. It was also found that ninth and tenth graders had more positive attitudes towards English classes. However, gender was not a predictive factor for students’ attitudes towards English. These results suggest that positive attitudes help students to overcome FLA. That is why, fostering positive and enjoyable language learning environment is significant to increase success in English.

Exploring the Link between Foreign Language Anxiety and Attitudes towards English among Turkish High School EFL Learners

The situational teaching is an effective and practical teaching model. Through implementing situational teaching in practical college English teaching, we can more effectively improve the effect of the teaching. The traditional teaching method mostly adopts the direct teaching method in college English courses because college English is a language courses. It is not conducive to creating feeling interactions between teachers and students. Through implementing situational teaching, we can make students more actively participate in the classroom teaching process. So students can better understand the language environment and cultural backgrounds related with the teaching and deepen the understanding of teaching content through their communications with teachers and other students. Based on advantages and principles of English situational teaching in colleges, this paper explores practical design of situational teaching at starting from specific problems in the teaching practice.
