TiO2 photocatalyst for water treatment applications

Treatment of textile wastewater using titanium dioxide (TiO2) photocatalysis has been started from the last decade and reached attention to the researchers because of its versatile application. The variety of applications of TiO2 as a photocatalyst has been taken place because of low operating temperature, biologically inert nature, low energy consumption, water insolubility, ease availability and photoactivity, less toxicity, high chemical stability, suitable flat band potential, narrow band gap and environmentally benign. The successful and efficient application of photocatalysis depends on quality of photocatalyst, nature of pollutants, and source of light, which should be in close contact with each other. The TiO2 photocatalyst is used for the effluent treatment of textile wastewater in the presence of ultraviolet (UV) irradiation. Heterogeneous UV-TiO2 photocatalysis is capable to remove organic pollutants from textile wastewater, which has been widely studied and the technology also being commercialized in many developing countries in the world. This review focuses on the mechanism of UV-TiO2 photocatalysis, modification of TiO2 photocatalyst, and application of doping and co-doping in order to improve the photocatalytic activity in wastewater treatment. In addition, the review conveys comprehensive and fundamental assessments of the photocatalytic activity for the removal of organic dyes and phenolic compounds from textile wastewater.

Photocatalytic Activity Improvement and Application of UV-TiO2 Photocatalysis in Textile Wastewater Treatment: A Review

Water is an essential part of life and its availability is important for all living creatures. On the other side, the world is suffering from a major problem of drinking water. There are several gases, microorganisms and other toxins (chemicals and heavy metals) added into water during rain, flowing water, etc. which is responsible for water pollution. This review article describes various applications of nanomaterial in removing different types of impurities from polluted water. There are various kinds of nanomaterials, which carried huge potential to treat polluted water (containing metal toxin substance, different organic and inorganic impurities) very effectively due to their unique properties like greater surface area, able to work at low concentration, etc. The nanostructured catalytic membranes, nanosorbents and nanophotocatalyst based approaches to remove pollutants from wastewater are eco-friendly and efficient, but they require more energy, more investment in order to purify the wastewater. There are many challenges and issues of wastewater treatment. Some precautions are also required to keep away from ecological and health issues. New modern equipment for wastewater treatment should be flexible, low cost and efficient for the commercialization purpose.

Water pollution is increasing at an ever increasing pace and the whole world is in the cancerous grip of this pollution. Various industries are discharging their untreated effluents into the nearby water resources; thus, adding to the existing water pollution to a great extent. Hence, there is a pressing demand to develop an alternate technology for wastewater treatment and in this context; photocatalysis has emerged as an Advanced Oxidation Process with green chemical approach for such a treatment. This chapter deals with photocatalytic degradation of different kinds of organic pollutants; mainly surfactants, pesticides, dyes, phenols, chloro compounds, nitrogen containing compounds etc. Mechanisms of their degradation have also been discussed with hydroxyl and allied radicals as the main active oxidizing species.

Enhancing photocatalytic activity of zinc oxide by coating with some natural pigments

World is presently facing two major problems: Energy crisis and ever increasing environmental pollution as the fossil fuels used today are polluting the environment and these resources are limited only for a few coming decades. nanosized materials are being used these days to provide alternative energy sources to fossil fuels, which is environmentally clean also. The development of newer photocatalytic nanomaterials will enable us to produce and store solar energy in the form of hydrogen. Hydrogen has been advocated as the fuel of future and it can be produced by photo-splitting of water in presence of photocatalytic materials. nanosized photocatalytic materials have also been utilized in solar cells and photocatalytic reduction of carbon dioxide (a step towards artificial photosynthesis). Although, the use of nanosized photocatalytic materials has long miles to go to compete with present day technology (Photovoltaics and use of fossil fules), but there is lot of hopes from this kind of material in years to come. This chapter deals with use of nanomaterials in conversion of solar energy into electricity, photogeneration of hydrogen, and photocatalytic reduction of carbon dioxide. Presently, majority of photovoltaic power comes from bulk semiconductors, and only a limited use has been made of nanosized semiconductors, but there is likely U-turn in coming decades so that nanosemiconductors will have an edge over bulk semiconductors.

The photocatalytic activity of pure ZnO and Carbon doped ZnO was compared by investigating the photodegradation of azure A under visible light. The reaction was monitored spectrophotmetrically. The effect of various parameters on the rate of reduction was observed. It was observed that carbon doped catalyst showed higher activity than the pure ZnO under visible light irradiation
