Journal ArticleDOI
Changes in archaeal, bacterial and eukaryal assemblages along a salinity gradient by comparison of genetic fingerprinting methods in a multipond solar saltern.
Emilio O. Casamayor,Ramon Massana,Susana Benlloch,Lise Øvreås,Beatriz Díez,Victoria Goddard,Josep M. Gasol,Ian Joint,Francisco Rodriguez-Valera,Carlos Pedrós-Alió +9 more
TL;DR: Although the particular taxonomic composition of microbial communities inhabiting a multipond solar saltern could vary among protocols, the general structure of the microbial assemblages was maintained.
Journal ArticleDOI
Salinibacter ruber gen. nov., sp. nov., a novel, extremely halophilic member of the Bacteria from saltern crystallizer ponds.
Josefa Antón,Aharon Oren,Susana Benlloch,Francisco Rodriguez-Valera,Rudolf Amann,Ramon Rosselló-Móra +5 more
TL;DR: Isolation of a bacterium from the natural environment that, although being a major component of the community, was previously known by its phylotype only is succeeded, allowing formal description of a novel genus and species.
Journal ArticleDOI
Prokaryotic genetic diversity throughout the salinity gradient of a coastal solar saltern
Susana Benlloch,Arantxa López-López,Emilio O. Casamayor,Lise Øvreås,Victoria Goddard,Frida Lise Daae,Gary R. Smerdon,Ramon Massana,Ian Joint,Frede Thingstad,Carlos Pedrós-Alió,Francisco Rodriguez-Valera +11 more
TL;DR: Water samples from eight ponds were analysed, covering a salinity range from near sea water to saturated sodium chloride, and both Bacteria and Archaea showed the same pattern; as salinity increased, the number of different clusters decreased, and only one cluster became dominant.
Journal ArticleDOI
Archaeal Biodiversity in Crystallizer Ponds from a Solar Saltern: Culture versus PCR
Susana Benlloch,Silvia G. Acinas,Josefa Antón,Arantxa López-López,S.P. Luz,Francisco Rodriguez-Valera +5 more
TL;DR: The results show an extremely low diversity for the haloarchaea retrieved by cultivation even when modifications to the standard technique are introduced.
Journal ArticleDOI
Prokaryotic Diversity in Zostera noltii-Colonized Marine Sediments
Ana Cifuentes,Josefa Antón,Susana Benlloch,Andrew Donnelly,Rodney A. Herbert,Francisco Rodriguez-Valera +5 more
TL;DR: The diversity of microorganisms present in a sediment colonized by the phanerogam Zostera noltii has been analyzed and microbial DNA was extracted and used for constructing two 16S rDNA clone libraries for Bacteria and Archaea.
