Ultra Wideband Signals and Systems in Communication Engineering

This paper deals with the conventional energy detection based cooperative spectrum sensing to overcome the problems of shadowing/fading and noise uncertainty of wireless channels. In cooperative spectrum sensing several cognitive radios cooperatively detect the unused frequency slots. We investigate the optimum voting rule as half voting rule also called majority rule in ‘n out of K’ rules and optimal number of cognitive radios with an aim to maximize the network utility function and minimize the error probability. The optimal conditions have been verified through simulation results over an AWGN channel and it is concluded that ‘majority rule’ outperforms the ‘AND rule’ and ‘OR rule’ in maximizing the utility function and minimizing the error probability.

Spectrum sensing is very crucial in cognitive radio networks (CRNs) for ensuring reliable data transmission. Additionally, it helps in providing sufficient protection to the licensed user against the interference. In CRNs, throughput maximization is becoming a key challenge in the presence of interference or collision to the primary user (PU). This directly affects the spectrum efficiency, and hence spectrum access opportunities get reduced. In this paper, we model an adaptive interference aware framework in soft decision fusion (SDF) based cooperative spectrum sensing (CSS) with power and sensing time optimization which jointly maximizes the system throughput under the constraint of interference power results from imperfect spectrum sensing. In this study, status of the PU during the data transmission period is considered as an exponential transition probability, and accordingly we formulate the interference constraint throughput maximization model. Simulation results validate the proposed adaptive algorithm framework for maximizing the system throughput by jointly optimizing the sensing time and transmitted power allocation to the CR users.

Interference-aware power allocation in soft decision fusion (SDF) based cooperative spectrum sensing

Body Area Network (BAN) is a wireless network of sensors on and inside the human body. The network here must be reliable and energy efficient. Cooperative communication has recently been applied in other sensor networks to improve reliability and reduce energy consumption. Basic relaying techniques like Amplify and Forward (AF) and Decode and Forward (DF) have their own set of advantages and disadvantages. This paper proposes a hybrid relaying mechanism comprising the combination of AF and DF relaying for multi relay Ultra Wideband (UWB) BAN. Simulation results prove that the proposed hybrid relaying strategy can provide better performance compared to the existing techniques.

Hybrid relaying for sensor to external communication in multi relay body area networks

This article presents stochastic geometry-based unified analytical framework to analyse the functionality of device-to-device (D2D) assisted cellular network in inband overlay mode. Independent marked Poisson point process (imPPP) is incorporated to probabilistically model the aggregate interference and SINR distribution of the randomly distributed nodes in the spatial domain. The proposed framework is applied to evaluate the overall network coverage probability improvement due to minimisation of congestion in the base station oriented core network by involving more devices in direct communication (through traffic offloading). Statistical analysis of slotted-synchronous and slotted-asynchronous traffic patterns in terms of throughput for varying transmission probability is also presented. From the application point of view, in the case of base station service interruption due to any natural calamity or power failure, the proposed multi-hop D2D chain relay formation helps to extend the cellular coverage in cell edges as well as in adjacent affected cell areas.
