Land-use changes affecting Pulsatilla vulgaris in England

TL;DR: Detailed study of a population of Pulsatilla in chalk grassland on the Barton Hills in Bedfordshire showed that in the absence of sheep-grazing, the number of plants increased mostly by vegetative growth from the perennial rootstock, but that as the litter formed by Bromus erectus developed, the proportion of plants which flowered each year diminished to 7% after 5 years of absence of grazing.
