Friction force models play a fundamental role for simulation of mechanical systems. Their choice affects the matching of numerical results with physically observed behavior. Friction is a complex phenomenon depending on many physical parameters and working conditions, and none of the available models can claim general validity. This paper focuses the attention on well-known friction models and offers a review and comparison based on numerical efficiency. However, it should be acknowledged that each model has its own distinctive pros and cons. Suitability of the model depends on physical and operating conditions. Features such as the capability to replicate stiction, Stribeck effect, and pre-sliding displacement are taken into account when selecting a friction formulation. For mechanical systems, the computational efficiency of the algorithm is a critical issue when a fast and responsive dynamic computation is required. This paper reports and compares eight widespread engineering friction force models. These are divided into two main categories: those based on the Coulomb approach and those established on the bristle analogy. The numerical performances and differences of each model have been monitored and compared. Three test cases are discussed: the Rabinowicz test and other two test problems casted for this occurrence.

Review and comparison of dry friction force models

This two-part review article presents an overview of mechanics of pipes conveying fluid and related problems such as the fluid-elastic instability under conditions of turbulence in nuclear power plants. In the first part, different types of modeling, dynamic analysis, and stability regimes of pipes conveying fluid restrained by elastic or inelastic barriers are described. The dynamic and stability behaviors of pinned-pinned, clamped-clamped, and cantilevered pipes conveying fluid together with curved and articulated pipes will be discussed. Other problems such as pipes made of viscoelastic materials and active control of severe pipe vibrations are considered. This part will be closed by conclusions highlighting resolved and nonresolved controversies reported in literature. The second part will address the problem of fluid-elastic instability in single- and two-phase flows and fretting wear in process equipment such as heat exchangers and steam generators. Connors critical velocity will be discussed as a measure of initiating fluid-elastic instability. Vibro-impact of heat exchanger tubes and the random excitation by the cross-flow can produce a progressive damage at the supports through fretting wear or fatigue. Antivibration bar supports used to limit pipe vibrations are described. An assessment of analytical, numerical, and experimental techniques of fretting wear problem of pipes in heat exchangers will be given. Other topics related to this part include remote impact analysis and parameter identification, pipe damage-induced by pressure elastic waves, the dynamic response and stability of long pipes, marine risers together with pipes aspirating fluid, and carbon nanotubes conveying fluid.

The harmonic balance method for bifurcation analysis of large-scale nonlinear mechanical systems

The harmonic balance (HB) method is widely used in the literature for analyzing the periodic solutions of nonlinear mechanical systems. The objective of this paper is to exploit the method for bifurcation analysis, i.e., for the detection and tracking of bifurcations of nonlinear systems. To this end, an algorithm that combines the computation of the Floquet exponents with bordering techniques is developed. A new procedure for the tracking of Neimark–Sacker bifurcations that exploits the properties of eigenvalue derivatives is also proposed. The HB method is demonstrated using numerical experiments of a spacecraft structure that possesses a nonlinear vibration isolation device.

The present review article addresses the vibration behavior of bladed disks encountered e.g. in aircraft engines as well as industrial gas and steam turbines. The utilization of the dissipative effects of dry friction in mechanical joints is a common means of the passive mitigation of structural vibrations caused by aeroelastic excitation mechanisms. The prediction of the vibration behavior is a scientific challenge due to (a) the strongly nonlinear contact interactions involving local sticking, sliding and liftoff, (b) the model order required to accurately describe the dynamic behavior of the assembly, and (c) the multi-disciplinary character of the problem associated with the need to account for structural mechanical as well as fluid dynamical effects. The purpose of this article is the overview and discussion the current state of the art of vibration prediction approaches. The modeling approaches in this work embrace the description of the rotating bladed disk, the contact modeling, the consideration of aeroelastic effects, appropriate model order reduction techniques and the exploitation of the rotationally periodic nature of the problem. The simulation approaches cover the direct computation of periodic, steady-state externally forced and self-excited vibrations using the high-order harmonic balance method, the formulation of the contact problem in the frequency domain, methods for the solution of the governing algebraic equations and advanced simulation approaches, including the concept of nonlinear modes.
