Attempts to generalize plant species effects on ecosystems have focused on single traits or suites of traits that strongly covary (functional groups). However, plant effects on any ecosystem process are mediated by multiple traits, and many of these traits vary independently from one another. Functional Matrix: A Conceptual Framework for Predicting Multiple Plant Effects on Ecosystem Processes

Cereal/legume intercropping increases dry matter production and grain yield more than their monocultures. When fertilizer N is limited, biological nitrogen fixation (BNF) is the major source of N in legume-cereal mixed cropping systems. The soil N use patterns of component crops depend on the N source and legume species. Nitrogen transfer from legume to cereal increases the cropping system's yield and efficiency of N use. The use of nitrate-tolerant legumes, whose BNF is thought to be little affected by application of combined N, may increase the quantity of N available for the cereal component. The distance between the cereal and legume root systems is important because N is transferred through the intermingling of root systems. Consequently, the most effective planting distance varies with type of legume and cereal. Mutual shading by component crops, especially the taller cereals, reduces BNF and yield of the associated legume. Light interception by the legume can be improved by selecting a suitable plant type and architecture. Planting pattern and population at which maximum yield is achieved also vary among component species and environments. Crops can be mixed in different proportions from additive to replacement or substitution mixtures. At an ideal population ratio a semi-additive mixture may produce higher gross returns.

Biological nitrogen fixation in mixed legume-cereal cropping systems

Mycorrhizal fungi are involved in the uptake of nutrients in exchange for C from host plants, and possibly in the transfer of C and nutrients between plants. Ecto-mycorrhizal fungi (EMF) increase uptake rates of nutrients by a variety of mechanisms, including increased physical access to soil, changes to mycorrhizosphere or hyphosphere chemistry, and alteration of the bacterial community in the mycorrhizosphere. They influence mycorrhizosphere chemistry through release of organic acids and production of enzymes. Movement of nutrients within an ecto-mycorrhizal (EM) mycelial network, as well as exchange of C and nutrients between symbionts, appear to be regulated by source-sink relationships. Estimates of the quantity of plant C partitioned belowground (to roots and EMF) varies widely (40–73%) depending on the methodology used and ecosystem studied, and is affected by several factors such as the identity of plant and fungal species, plant nutrient content, and EM age.

Carbon and Nutrient Fluxes Within and Between Mycorrhizal Plants

Removing cover crop top growth in the spring for forage or to prevent incorporation problems is one management option. The effects of this residue management on soil quality and productivity need to be determined. This study, conducted from 1994 to 1998 at Puyallup, WA, determined effects of various winter cover crops and residue management on soil N availability, soil C and N, and corn (Zea mays L.) yield. Included in the study were monocultures of rye (Secale cereale L.), ryegrass (Lolium multiflorum Lam), and vetch (Vicia villosa Roth subsp. villosa ) and biculture of vetch and rye or ryegrass. Each year, the cover crops were seeded in the fall and incorporated into, or removed from, the soil in the spring. Average top-growth biomass was higher for the bicultures than for the monocultures. Total N accumulation was generally greatest under vetch, followed by the bicultures, and lowest for the monocultured rye or ryegrass. Whereas removing top growth of monocultured vetch or bicultures depressed presidedress soil NO 3 -N (N i ), the effect was generally not found for monocultured rye or ryegrass. Corn yields were affected by amounts of N i and N fertilizer applied (r 2 > 0.789), irrespective of cover crop species and residue management. Removing top growth of the cover crops limited residue C input and reduced soil organic C and N after 5 yr. Soil organic C and N accumulation, as well as increasing soil C sequestration to reduce CO 2 release into atmosphere, should be considered when deciding which residue management option to choose.

Influence of winter cover crop and residue management on soil nitrogen availability and corn

Biculture legume-cereal cover cropping may enhance above- and belowground biomass yields and C and N contents. The increase in C and N supply to the soil has the potential to improve soil quality and crop productivity compared with monoculture cover crop species. We examined above- and belowground (0- to 120-cm soil depth) biomass yields and C and N contents of a legume [hairy vetch (Vicia villosa Roth)], nonlegume [rye (Secale cereale L.)], and biculture of legume and nonlegume (vetch and rye) cover crops planted without tillage in the fall of 1999 to 2001 in central Georgia. After cover crop kill in the spring, cotton (Gossypium hitsutum L.) and sorghum [Sorghum bicolor (L.) Moench)] were planted using three tillage practices (no-till, strip till, and chisel till) with three N fertilization rates (0, 60 to 65, and 120 to 130 kg N ha '). The field experiment was arranged in a split-split plot. treatment with three replications on a Dothan sandy loam (fine-loamy, kaolinitic, thermic, Plinthic Kandiudults). Aboveground biomass yield of rye decreased from 6.1 to 2.3 Mg ha ' from 2000 to 2002, but yield of hairy vetch varied (2.4 to 5.2 Mg ha -1 ). In contrast, biomass yield of vetch and rye biculture (5.6 to 8.2 Mg ha -1 ) was greater than that of rye and vetch planted alone in all years. Compared with winter weeds in no cover crop treatment, C content in rye (1729 to 2670 kg ha -1 ') was greater due to higher biomass yield, but N content in vetch (76 to 165 kg ha -1 ) was greater due to higher N concentration, except in 2002. As a result, C (2260 to 3512 kg ha -1 ) and N (84 to 310 kg ha -1 ) contents in biculture were greater than those from monocultures in all years. Similarly, belowground biomass yield and C and N contents were greater in biculture than in monocultures. In 2001, aboveground biomass yield and C and N contents in coyer crops were also greater in strip till with biculture than in other treatments, except in chisel till with vetch and biculture, but belowground biomass yield and N content were greater in chisel till with biculture than in no-till, strip till, and chisel till with weeds. Cotton lint yield was lower with biculture than with rye, but sorghum grain yield and cotton and sorghum biomass (stems + leaves) yields and N uptake were greater with biculture than with rye. Because of higher biomass yield and C and N contents, biculture of hairy vetch and rye cover crops may increase N supply, summer crop yields, and N uptake compared with rye and may increase potentials to improve soil organic matter and reduce N leaching compared with vetch.

Biculture Legume–Cereal Cover Crops for Enhanced Biomass Yield and Carbon and Nitrogen

Three legume species (alfalfa, red clover, and birdsfoot trefoil) in combination with five grass species (timothy, bromegrass, red fescue, tall fescue, and orchardgrass) were used to study N transfer in mixtures, using the 15N dilution technique. The advantage of grass-legume mixtures was apparent. Total herbage and protein yields of grasses in mixtures were higher than those alone, especially at the later cuts. This benefit of mixed cropping is mainly due to N transfer from legumes to associated grasses. N2-fixation and N transfer by alfalfa rated highest, red clover intermediate, and birdsfoot trefoil lowest. The importance of each pathway of N transfer from legumes appeared to differ between species. Alfalfa and red clover excreted more N than trefoil, while the latter contributed more N from decomposition of dead nodule and root tissue. The greatest advantage from a grass-legume mixture, with respect to the utilization of N released from the legume, varied with early maturing tall fescue (Kentucky 31), orchardgrass (Juno), and bromegrass (Tempo), to intermediate timothy (Climax), and least with late maturing red fescue (Carlawn).
