Fast-starts are brief, sudden accelerations used by fish during predator‐prey encounters. The kinematics and performance of fish during fast-start manoeuvres have received a lot of attention since they may determine the outcome of predator‐prey interactions in terms of feeding success or survival. We will discuss recent progress on (1) the kinematics of escape responses and feeding strikes, (2) the fast-start performance of species with different body morphologies and from different habitats, and (3) the functional significance of fast-start kinematics and performance within the context of predator‐prey interactions.

Review the kinematics and performance of fish fast-start swimming

Seasonal cooling can modify the thermal preferenda of ectothermic vertebrates and elicit a variety of physiological responses ranging from winter dormancy to an acclimation response that partially compensates for the effects of low temperature on activity. Partial compensation of activity levels is particularly common in aquatic species for which seasonal temperature changes provide a stable cue for initiating the response. Thermal plasticity of locomotory performance has evolved independently on numerous occasions, and there is considerable phylogenetic diversity with respect to the mechanisms at the physiological and molecular levels. In teleosts, neuromuscular variables that can be modified include the duration of motor nerve stimulation, muscle activation and relaxation times, maximum force and unloaded shortening velocity (V(max)), although not all are modified in every species. Thermal plasticity in V(max) has been associated with changes in myosin ATPase activity and myosin heavy chain (MyHC) composition and/or with a change in the ratio of myosin light chain isoforms. In common carp (Cyprinus carpio), there are continuous changes in phenotype with acclimation temperature at lower levels of organisation, such as MyHC composition and V(max), but a distinct threshold for an effect in terms of locomotory performance. Thus, there is no simple relationship between whole-animal performance and muscle phenotype. The nature and magnitude of temperature acclimation responses also vary during ontogeny. For example, common carp acquire the ability to modify MyHC composition with changes in acclimation temperature during the juvenile stage. In contrast, the thermal plasticity of swimming performance observed in tadpoles of the frog Limnodynastes peronii is lost in the terrestrial adult stage. Although it is often assumed that the adjustments in locomotory performance associated with temperature acclimation enhance fitness, this has rarely been tested experimentally. Truly integrative studies of temperature acclimation are scarce, and few studies have considered both sensory and motor function in evaluating behavioural responses. Developmental plasticity is a special case of a temperature acclimation response that can lead to temporary or permanent changes in morphology and/or physiological characteristics that affect locomotory performance.

Thermal plasticity of skeletal muscle phenotype in ectothermic vertebrates and its significance for locomotory behaviour.

Longevity is inversely proportional to ambient temperature in ectothermic organisms such as fish. However, the mechanism by which reducing temperature over a physiological range increases life span is not known and available data are derived primarily from invertebrates. With a rodent-like longevity and abundant biological resources, the zebrafish is an ideal vertebrate ectothermic model in which to investigate this phenomenon. As an initial approach, the effects of a year-long 10 °C reduction in water temperature on global gene expression in tail skeletal muscle from adult zebrafish were determined using an oligonucleotide microarray representing 15,512 genes. Expression levels for approximately 600 genes were up-regulated by 1.7-fold or greater by the reduction in temperature, while a similar number of transcripts were down regulated by more than 1.7-fold. Using gene ontology (GO) classifications for molecular function, two functional groups, “oxygen and reactive oxygen species metabolism” and “response to oxidative stress,” were found to be overrepresented among up-regulated genes. Transcripts levels for the genes in these two categories were increased by temperature reduction (TR). However, temperature reduction did not suppress lipid peroxidation potential, protein carbonyl content, or 8-oxoguanine level. Additional studies will be required to further delineate the role of altered gene expression and oxidative stress on the longevity-promoting effects of temperature reduction.

The effects of temperature reduction on gene expression and oxidative stress in skeletal muscle from adult zebrafish.

Goldfish (Family Cyprinidae, Carassius auratus) and killifish (Family Cyprinodontidae, Fundulus heteroclitus) were acclimated to 10, 20 and 35 ˚C for 4 weeks. The thermal acclimation of C-start (escape swimming) performance and the physiological properties of fast twitch muscle fibres that underlie it were investigated in these species at the molecular (myosin isoform expression), biochemical (myofibrillar ATPase activity), cellular (contractile kinetics) and organismal levels of organisation. Peptide maps were obtained for fast muscle myosin heavy chains, isolated from 10 ˚C- and 35 ˚C-acclimated fish. Different myosin heavy chain isoforms were expressed in response to a change in acclimation temperature in goldfish, but myosin heavy chain isoform expression was unaffected by acclimation temperature in killifish. Compared with fish acclimated to 35 ˚C, acclimation to 10 ˚C increased the activity of fast muscle myofibrillar ATPase assayed at 10 ˚C fivefold in goldfish and only 50 % in killifish. Muscle twitch contraction time at 10 ˚C decreased significantly in response to acclimation to 10 ˚C in both species; however, the magnitude of this response was much greater in goldfish (100 %) than in killifish (30 % or less). In goldfish, these changes in the physiological properties of fast twitch fibres during 10 ˚C acclimation resulted in a six- to eightfold increase in the speed and turning velocity of fish performing C-starts at 10 ˚C. By comparison, the somewhat smaller acclimatory response of killifish fast muscle properties was accompanied by only a minor (50 % or less) adjustment in locomotor performance. Thermal acclimatory responses of fast muscle at the molecular, biochemical and cellular levels of organisation are clearly reflected in alterations in organismal escape performance.

Growth and meat quality relations in carp

After several weeks of cold acclimation, the swimming performance of some fish is increased at low temperatures and decreased at high temperatures. The temperature compensation of locomotory activity involves changes in central patterns of muscle fiber recruitment and in the properties of the peripheral nervous system and muscle tissues. In some freshwater fish belonging to the family Cyprinidae, including the goldfish (Carassius auratus), the common carp (Cyprinus carpio), and the roach (Rutilus rutilus), the intrinsic contractile properties of muscles are modified by thermal acclimation. Parameters that can be altered by temperature acclimation in both fast and slow muscle fibers include isometric twitch contraction time, maximum force production, and unloaded shortening speed. The molecular mechanisms responsible for these changes in contractility are discussed.
