Optimization of municipal solid waste management in Port Said - Egypt.

Alternative formulations for optimization and simulation of structural and mechanical systems and other related fields are reviewed. The material is divided roughly into two parts. Part 1 focuses on the developments in structural and mechanical systems, including configuration and topology optimization. Here the formulations are classified into three broad categories: (i) the conventional formulation where only the structural design variables are treated as optimization variables, (ii) simultaneous analysis and design (SAND) formulations where design and some of the state variables are treated as optimization variables, and (iii) a displacement-based two-phase approach where the displacements are treated as unknowns in the outer loop and the design variables as the unknowns in the inner loop. Part 2 covers more general formulations that are applicable to diverse fields, such as economics, optimal control, multidisciplinary problems and other engineering disciplines. In these fields, SAND-type formulations have been called mathematical programs with equilibrium constraints (MPEC), and partial differential equations (PDE)-constrained optimization problems. These formulations are viewed as generalizations of the SAND formulations developed in the structural optimization field. Based on the review, it is concluded that the basic ideas of the formulations presented in diverse fields can be integrated to conduct further research and develop alternative formulations and solution procedures for practical engineering applications. Optimal management of renewable energy sources by virtual power plant

A method is developed for carrying out parametric analysis on a mixed integer linear program (MILP) as either objective function coefficients or right-hand-side values of the constraints are varied continuously. The method involves solving MILPs at point values of the parameters of variation and joining the results by LP parametric analysis. The procedure for parametric analysis on the objective function can be continued until a theoretical result proves that the analysis is complete. However, a heuristic rule that is presented may greatly reduce the number of individual MILPs that have to be solved and thus reduce the total computational effort. The rule assumes that if the same values of the integer variables are optimal at two different values of the change parameter, these same integer variable values will also be optimal at all intermediate parameter values. Selecting transfer station locations for large solid waste systems

The requirements of a solid wnste collection, transportation and disposal system are formulated using mixtid integer linear programming. The object of the study reported herein is to identify from among several alternatives which sanitary landfill site or sites should be seriously considered for disposal. Costs for collection vehicles, transfer stations, large road carriers, and landfill sites are considered on a present worth basis over the time period specified. Some of the data have been disguised to protect the interests of the client.
