Coplanar waveguide circuits, components, and systems

Con formal mapping techniques are used to obtain closed-form expressions for the coplanar line characteristic impedance and its effective dielectric constant in the general case in terms of all finite line dimensions and substrate thickness. Also. closed-form expressions are presented far the case where there is a ground plane on the other substrate surface. These expressions, that can lift calculated manually, are in very good agreement with published experimental results.

Extension of the application of conformal mapping techniques to coplanar lines with finite dimensions

End-coupled resonator bandpass filters built in coplanar waveguide are investigated. The admittance inverter parameters of the coupling gaps between resonant sections are deduced from experiment, and bandpass filter design rules are developed. This allows easy filter synthesis from "prototype" low-pass designs. Measurements of single section resonator quality factors are used to predict filter insertion losses. Several examples of filters realized in coplanar waveguide are presented. Odd-mode coplanar waveguide filter elements that shortcircuit the even coplanar waveguide mode are investigated. Filter tuning, accomplished by adjusting the height of conducting planes above the resonant filter sections, is demonstrated.

Design and Performance of Coplanar Waveguide Bandpass Filters

Fast, accurate, and simple approximate analytic formulas are presented for calculating the quasi-static-TEM parameters of supported coplanar waveguide (SCPW) structures. These include the open, covered as well as dielectric over-layed SCPWs. These formulas have been designed for use in (M)MICs CAD programs and are only valid whenever the supporting material is of lower permittivity. Comprehensive comparisons have been made by using a rigorous spectral-domain hybrid mode analysis. Accuracy is found to be better than 1% for most of the operating range of physical dimensions and available dielectric materials ( in /sub r/=1 to 20). Numerical results are also presented in order to investigate the properties of different SCPW structures. >

Fast, accurate and simple approximate analytic formulas for calculating the parameters of supported coplanar waveguides for (M)MIC's

Equivalent capacitances of coplanar waveguide discontinuities on multilayered substrates are calculated using a three-dimensional finite-different method. The application of the method is demonstrated for open ends and gaps in microstrip and coplanar waveguides, as well as for more complicated structures such as interdigitated capacitors. The main advantage of the method is its flexibility in treating multilayered substrates and different conductor configurations. It can therefore be applied to more complicated structures such as interdigitated capacitors, air bridges, and waveguide transitions. The effect of conductor metallization thickness and shielding walls is also taken into account. Good agreement between the calculated data and measurements up to 25 GHz in the case of coplanar structures indicates the validity of the static analysis even for high frequencies. >

Equivalent capacitances of coplanar waveguide discontinuities and interdigitated capacitors using a three-dimensional finite difference method

The characteristics of new strip lines [i.e., a single strip-conductor coplanar-type strip line (S-CPS), a two symmetrical strip-conductor coplanar-type strip line (T-CPS), and a coupled strip-conductor coplanar-type strip line (C-CPS), which consists of single two-center strip conductors or coupled strip conductors and ground plates on a dielectric substrate and outer ground conductor] are calculated by the relaxation method. The effect of the outer ground conductor and side wall on these lines is analyzed and the characteristic impedance and phase-velocity ratio are determined. The characteristic impedance is determined experimentally and the maximum values of the discrepancies compared with the calculated value of each of the lines are 2.0-3.0 percent. Application examples of the coplanar-type strip line to microwave transistor amplifier and parallel-coupled filter are shown. A transistor amplifier of small size, light weight, wide bandwidth, and improved reliability is achieved. A parallel-coupled filter small in size (reduction ratio is more than 50 percent), with good frequency symmetry and featuring easy resonance frequency fine tuning is obtained.
