The performance of a heat pipe depends on several factors, one of which is the nature of the wick structure. Optimization of heat pipe performance requires wick structures that can provide high capillary pressure, and yet still offer low resistance to fluid flow. The current level of technology being developed in our laboratory makes it possible to engineer desired wick structures both micro- and macroscopically, especially tailored to optimize heat pipe performance. In order to assist the fabrication of unique wick structure, the influence of wick structure characteristics on heat pipe performance is numerically investigated in this work. Numerical methods are an effective tool to significantly reduce the number of experimental trials. Comparisons are made between performances of heat pipe with different wick structures; coarse pore sizes, fine pore sizes and a composite comprised of coarse and fine pore sizes. Results indicate superior performance, with a factor of up to 2, for heat pipe with composite structure combining coarse/fine wick. Dynamic test method for determining the thermal performances of heat pipes

This study developed a magnetic-nanofluid (MNF) heat pipe (MNFHP) with magnetically enhanced thermal properties. Its main characteristic was additional porous iron nozzle in the evaporator and the condenser to form a unique flowing pattern of MNF slug and vapor, and to magnetically shield the magnet attraction on MNF flowing. The results showed that an optimal thermal conductivity exists in the applied field of 200 Oe. Furthermore, the minor thermal performance of MNF at the condenser limited the thermal conductivity of the entire MNFHP, which was 1.6 times greater than that filled with water for the input power of 60 W. The feasibilities of an MNFHP with the magnetically enhanced heat transfer and the ability of vertical operation were proved for both a promising heat-dissipation device and the energy architecture integrated with an additional energy system.

Development of a cryogenic target system with optimal access to reaction detectors

The flow characteristics in the porous wick of a flat heat pipe subjected to boiling and condensation are analysed here using two-phase mixture model. Steady laminar boundary layer flow in the capillary wick structure is considered for both vertical and horizontal orientations. The governing boundary layer partial differential equations are simplified using similarity transformation. The transformed equations are then solved numerically by using shooting iterative technique. Investigation was carried out for the effects of the involved parameters such as saturation and temperature across the boundary layer. The behaviour of non-dimensional numbers due to the orientation of the heat pipe is also discussed. The study confirms that orientation plays a significant role in flow and temperature field.

Numerical Investigation of Deviation of Phase Change Characteristics of Horizontal and Vertical Flat Heat Pipe Configurations

This paper presents numerical simulation of the physical phenomena in heat pipe. The vapour dynamics of working fluid is considered in the numerical analysis of the heat pipe. A two-phase analysis is carried out for the heat pipe. The compressible flow equations for vapour-phase interaction with water particle phase are solved by a finite volume technique. A three stage Runge-Kutta time-stepping method is employed to solve vapour dynamics. Damping term is added to stablize the numerical scheme. An example is worked out to study the two phase flow in the heat pipe.
