When individual seedlings of Datura ferox and Sinapis alba were transferred to populations formed by plants of similar stature, they responded with an increase in the rate of stem elongation. The reaction was detected within 3 days after transplanting and occurred well before shading among neighbors became important. This rapid response, which may be crucial for success in the competition for light, was reduced or abolished when individual internodes were "blinded" to the far-red radiation scattered by the surrounding seedlings. These results show the operation of a localized, photomorphogenetic control of stem elongation that may play a central role in the plastic adjustment of plants during the early stages of canopy development.

Far-Red Radiation Reflected from Adjacent Leaves: An Early Signal of Competition in Plant Canopies

The dynamic light environment of vegetation canopies is perceived by phytochromes, cryptochromes, phototropins, and UV RESISTANCE LOCUS 8 (UVR8). These receptors control avoidance responses to preclude exposure to limiting or excessive light and acclimation responses to cope with conditions that cannot be avoided. The low red/far-red ratios of shade light reduce phytochrome B activity, which allows PHYTOCHROME INTERACTING FACTORS (PIFs) to directly activate the transcription of auxin-synthesis genes, leading to shade-avoidance responses. Direct PIF interaction with DELLA proteins links gibberellin and brassinosteroid signaling to shade avoidance. Shade avoidance also requires CONSTITUTIVE PHOTOMORPHOGENESIS 1 (COP1), a target of cryptochromes, phytochromes, and UVR8. Multiple regulatory loops and the input of the circadian clock create a complex network able to respond even to subtle threats of competition with neighbors while still compensating for major environmental fluctuations such as the day-night cycles.

Photoreceptor signaling networks in plant responses to shade.

We have tested the hypothesis that a plant may detect the presence of a neighboug42r, before being shaded by it, through the perception of the spectral composition of reflected sunlight. Within seedling canopies the red: far-red ratio (R: FR) of the light received by a sensor with a geometry approximating that of a stem was significantly reduced by selective reflection. This effect was observed before any reduction in the amount of photosynthetic light energy received by an individual seedling could be detected. Small green fences of grass, east-west orientated, altered the spectral distribution of the light on the north (sunlit) side of them. Fully illuminated seedlings of Sinapis alba grown on the north side of these green fences produced longer internodes and had a lower leaf: stem dry weight ratio than those grown in front of fences of bleached grasses. A similar redistribution of growth was elicited in seedlings of Chenopodium album, Datura ferox and S. alba growing in full sunlight by exposing plants to additional small quantities of far-red reflected by selective mirrors. These results suggest that the change in the R: FR ratio serves as an early warning signal of oncoming competition.

Early detection of neighbour plants by phytochrome perception of spectral changes in reflected sunlight

Precise allocation of limited resources between growth and defense is critical for plant survival. In shade-intolerant species, perception of competition signals by informational photoreceptors activates shade-avoidance responses and reduces the expression of defenses against pathogens and insects. The main mechanism underlying defense suppression is the simultaneous downregulation of jasmonate and salicylic acid signaling by low ratios of red:far-red radiation. Inactivation of phytochrome B by low red:far-red ratios appears to suppress jasmonate responses by altering the balance between DELLA and JASMONATE ZIM DOMAIN (JAZ) proteins in favor of the latter. Light regulation of plant defense.

The phytochromes are a family of plant photoreceptor proteins that control several adaptive developmental strategies1,2. For example, the phytochromes perceive far-red light (wavelengths between 700 and 800 nm) reflected or scattered from the leaves of nearby vegetation. This provides an early warning of potential shading, and triggers a series of ‘shade-avoidance’ responses, such as a rapid increase in elongation3, by which the plant attempts to overgrow its neighbours3. Other, less immediate, responses include accelerated flowering and early production of seeds. However, little is known about the molecular events that connect light perception with increased growth in shade avoidance. Here we show that the circadian clock gates this rapid shade-avoidance response. It is most apparent around dusk and is accompanied by altered expression of several genes. One of these rapidly responsive genes encodes a basic helix–loop–helix protein, PIL1, previously shown to interact with the clock protein TOC1 (ref. 4). Furthermore PIL1 and TOC1 are both required for the accelerated growth associated with the shade-avoidance response.

Gating of the rapid shade-avoidance response by the circadian clock in plants

Treatment of the whole of aSinapis alba plant with supplementary far-red light (FR), in back-ground white light (WL), induces a rapid increase in stem extension rate. This rapid increase is regulated by the light environment of the stem itself. Supplementary FR to the stem increases extension rate after a lag period of 10–15 min. A lag period of 3–4 h follows FR irradiation of the leaf, before an increase in extension rate is detectable. When the stem is given supplementary FR, the change in extension rate which is induced increases with increasing FR fluence rate, and with decreasing phytochrome photoequilibrium. There is no difference between the effects of supplementary FR λmax 719 nm and supplementary FR λmax 739 nm for these relationships. The increase in extension rate induced by supplementary FR is reversed by an increase in the fluence rate of red light (R). These data indicate that the response is controlled by phytochrome photoequilibrium.
