Systems and methods for monitoring various physiological and environmental factors, as well as systems and methods for using this information for a plurality of useful purposes, are provided. Real-time, noninvasive health and environmental monitors include a plurality of compact sensors integrated within small, low-profile devices. Physiological and environmental data is collected and wirelessly transmitted into a wireless network, where the data is stored and/or processed. This information is then used to support a variety of useful methods, such as clinical trials, marketing studies, biofeedback, entertainment, and others.

Physiological and environmental monitoring systems and methods

A monitoring device configured to be attached to the ear of a person includes a base, an earbud housing extending outwardly from the base that is configured to be positioned within an ear of a subject, and a cover surrounding the earbud housing. The base includes a speaker, an optical emitter, and an optical detector. The cover includes light transmissive material that is in optical communication with the optical emitter and the optical detector and serves as a light guide to deliver light from the optical emitter into the ear canal of the subject wearing the device at one or more predetermined locations and to collect light external to the earbud housing and deliver the collected light to the optical detector.

Light-guiding devices and monitoring devices incorporating same

A physiological monitoring system includes a sensor subsystem worn by a person including at least a one sensor. A dock is associated with the sensor subsystem and includes a first connector component electrically connected to the sensor. A portable transmitting unit is received in the dock and includes a transmitter and a connector component removeably mateable with the dock connector component to route sensor data to the transmitter.

Physiological status monitoring system

Methods and apparatus for qualifying and quantifying excitation-dependent physiological information extracted from wearable sensors in the midst of interference from unwanted sources are provided. An organism is interrogated with at least one excitation energy, energy response signals from two or more distinct physiological regions are sensed, and these signals are processed to generate an extracted signal. The extracted signal is compared with a physiological model to qualify and/or quantify a physiological property. Additionally, important physiological information can be qualified and quantified by comparing the excitation wavelength-dependent response, measured via wearable sensors, with a physiological model.

Noninvasive physiological analysis using excitation-sensor modules and related devices and methods

A vital-signs patch for a patient monitoring system is disclosed. The patch consists of a housing that is configured to be worn on the skin of a patient. The housing contains a radio, one or more sensor interfaces, a processor, and a battery. The processor can selectably turn portions of the processor off and on and selectably turn power off and on to at least a portion of the sensor interfaces and radio. The processor includes a timer that, each time the timer times out, will turn all the parts of the processor on and start a new timing period. When the processor receives a signal, the processor will turn off power to at least a portion of the processor and at least a portion of the sensor interfaces.

System and method for saving battery power in a patient monitoring system

: An unprecedented opportunity exists to introduce real-time physiological and environmental monitoring technology into future US Army dismounted forces for use in both training and combat situations. The motivation is to enhance the survivability of the individual warfighter and to provide increased situational awareness to both combat medics and commanders during the course of a mission or field operation. The monitoring technology must be reliable, must be unobtrusive, and compelling in terms of value to both the lowest-echelon warfighters and their command chain. Realizing these objectives will require adapting and extending ambulatory medical monitoring technology well beyond the capabilities of current commercial devices and systems, and will place the US Army in a unique position with regard to real-time physiological status and health monitoring. This report identifies specific technology and system level issues that must be addressed to realize the objective system and proposes both a near-term and far-term system concept and development strategy. Technology developments critical to success include covert wireless personal area networking, physiological and environmental sensors hardened for the dynamic warfighter environment, and real-time data processing and fusion algorithms to extract the relevant physiological information and overall health status.
