An experimental study was made of the flow over a backward-facing step. Excitations were given to separated flow by means of a sinusoidally oscillating jet issuing from a thin slit near the separation line. The Reynolds number based on the step height (H) varied 13000 ⩽ Re

Aspects of turbulent boundary-layer separation

Direct numerical simulation (DNS) and large-eddy simulation (LES) are carried out to investigate the frequency effect of zero-net-mass-flux forcing (synthetic jet) on a generic separated flow. The selected test case is a rounded ramp at a Reynolds number based on the step height of 28 275. The incoming boundary layer is fully turbulent with Rθ=1410. The whole flow in the synthetic jet cavity is computed to ensure an accurate description of the actuator effect on the flow field. In a first step, DNS is used to validate LES of this particular flow. In a second step, the effect of a synthetic jet at two reduced frequencies of 0.5 and 4 (based on the separation length of the uncontrolled case and the free-stream velocity) is investigated using LES. It is demonstrated that, with a proper choice of the oscillating frequency, separation can be drastically reduced for a velocity ratio between the jet and the flow lower than one. The low frequency is close to the natural vortex shedding frequency. Two different modes of the synthetic jet have been identified. A vorticity-dominated mode is observed in the low-frequency forcing case for which the separation length is reduced by 54%, while an acoustic-dominated mode is identified in the high-frequency forcing case for which the separation length is increased by 43%. The decrease of the separation length in the low-frequency forcing case is correlated with an increase of the turbulent kinetic energy level and consequently with an increase of the entrainment in the separated zone. A linear inviscid stability analysis shows that the increase of the separation length in the high-frequency forcing case is due to a modification of the mean velocity profile suggested by Stanek and coworkers. The result is a lower amplification of the perturbations and consequently, a lower entrainment into the mixing layer. To our knowledge, it is the first time that Stanek's hypothesis has been assessed, thanks to numerical simulations of fully turbulent flow.

Numerical simulation of active separation control by a synthetic jet

Particle mixing in free shear flows

An experimental study was made of the effect of a periodic velocity perturbation on the separation bubble downstream of the sharp-edged blunt face of a circular cylinder aligned coaxially with the free stream. Velocity fluctuations were produced with an acoustic driver located within the cylinder and a small circumferential gap located immediately downstream of the fixed separation line to allow communication with the external flow. The flow could be considerably modified when forced at frequencies lower than the initial Kelvin-Helmholtz frequencies of the free shear layer, and with associated vortex wavelengths comparable to the bubble height. Reattachment length, bubble height, pressure at separation, and average pressure on the face were all reduced. The effects on the large-scale structures were studied on flow photographs obtained by the smoke-wire technique. The forcing increased the entrainment near the leading edge. It was concluded that the final vortex of the shear layer before reattachment is an important element of the flow structure. There are two different instabilities involved, the Kelvin-Helmholtz instability of the free shear layer and the “shedding” type instability of the entire bubble. A method of frequency scaling is proposed which correlates data for a variety of bubbles and supports an analogy with Karman vortex shedding.

The Structure and Control of a Turbulent Reattaching Flow

Recent experimental observations have shown that large-scale organized vortices are produced in reattaching separated flows. Interactions between these vortices are important in the development of these flows downstream. Experimental studies from a downstream-fac ing step flow are presented to demonstrate that substantial changes in a reattaching flow can be produced by controlled forcing techniques. The forcing apparently works by affecting the vortex merging process in a fashion similar to that observed in forced mixinglayer experiments. The separated mean flow spreading rate could be increased most effectively by forcing at a nondimensional frequency (based on step height and freestream velocity) between 0.2 and 0.4. This result was found to be relatively independent of step Reynolds numbers over the range (26,000-76,000) studied. A significant decrease in the reattachment length accompanied the increased growth of the separated shear layer. Considerable changes in the turbulence energy and the Reynolds stress levels were also observed for the forced flows.
