Oxide morphologies on aluminum prepared for adhesive bonding

TL;DR: In this article, high resolution stereo micrographs obtained in this manner provide striking visual evidence for fine oxide protrusions which apparently interlock with the adhesive to enhance bond strength.
Journal ArticleDOI

Application of surface behaviour diagrams to the study of hydration of phosphoric acid-anodized aluminium

TL;DR: In this article, the hydration of aluminium surfaces prepared for adhesive bonding by anodization in phosphoric acid has been studied using surface behaviour diagrams. And the surface behavior diagrams, which are similar to phase diagrams for equilibrium bulk phases, trace the evolution of the aluminium adherend surface composition, obtained by X-ray photo-electron spectroscopy, during hydration process.
Journal ArticleDOI

Interpretation of AES depth profiles of porous Al anodic oxides

TL;DR: In this paper, the effects of microtopographical structures on the Auger electron spectroscopic (AES) depth profiles of porous Al anodic oxides were discussed, and the morphology of the oxide surface before and after ion sputtering was studied by means of a high resolution scanning transmission electron microscope (STEM), and the result was correlated with the AES profile data to make a rational interpretation of the profiles of Al, O, Ar, Cu and P in the anodic films formed in H 3 PO 4 solutions.
Journal ArticleDOI

Effects of chemical and thermal treatments on the composition of 2024 aluminum adherend surfaces

TL;DR: In this article, the chemical composition of an adherend surface depends not only on the method of surface preparation but also on the procedure by which an adhesive/Al bond is formed.
Book ChapterDOI

Correlation of Surface Chemistry and Durability of Aluminum/ Polymer Bonds

TL;DR: In this article, the surface composition of PAA aluminum alloys was determined using X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) and these data were used to construct an Al2O3 - AlPO4 - H2O surface behavior diagram.
