Conventional protocol architectures based on a static configuration of relatively few protocols are incapable of providing the level of performance the channel is capable of producing while still performing the processing needed by the application. Multimedia applications require transport systems that can be configured to match the functional requirements of diverse multimedia traffic sources as well as capably of adapting to the dynamism inherent in multimedia applications and heterogeneous internetworks.This paper describes ADAPTIVE, a transport system architecture to support multimedia applications for high-speed networks. The ADAPTIVE system applied object-oriented design and implementation techniques to build an integrated framework for protocol specification, composition, prototyping and experimentation. It utilizes a hierarchical specification technique that allows both the policies of a communication session to be specified and the actual mechanisms used to carry out these policies. Its monitoring and analysis facilities provide a rich environment for controlled experimentation through the use of rapid prototyping and integrated instrumentation.

ADAPTIVE: a flexible and adaptive transport system architecture to support lightweight protocols for multimedia applications on high-speed networks

The Collision Avoidance Tree is a local area network based on a hardware device called the collision avoidance switch. The collision avoidance switch arbitrates random access to a shared communication channel and avoids the penalty of collisions among packets. This network combines the benefits of random access (low delay when traffic is light; simple, distributed, and robust protocols) with concurrency of transmission, excellent network utilization and suitability for the domain of high-speed optical networking. The Collision Avoidance Tree is classified in two groups: the Collision Avoidance Single Broadcast (CASB) Tree and the Collision Avoidance Multiple Broadcast (CAMB) Tree. The CASB Tree allows only a single transmission on the network at a given time, while the CAMB Tree allows concurrent transmissions on the network. This paper describes network architectures (station and switch protocols) as well as designs and implementations. Performance results derived from analyses, simulations, and measurements of experimental networks are also presented.

Collision avoidance tree networks

The design and implementation of a local area network architecture based on collision avoidance, called the collision avoidance multiple broadcast (CAMB) tree network, are described. The implementation follows the protocol layering architecture of the IEEE 802 local area networks and includes CAMB tree switches, station/network interface boards, and support of transport protocols. Design, implementation and measurement of a collision avoidance multiple broadcast tree network

Presents a design of a collision avoidance switch for the collision avoidance multiple broadcast (CAMB) tree using transistor-transistor logic (TTL) devices. A simulation study exploring the performance of the broadcast star network in both synchronous and asynchronous operations is also presented. Simulation results show that the slotted broadcast star achieves better performance than the unslotted broadcast star, especially when the traffic load is heavy. >
