. The transformation of a random wave field in shallow water of variable depth is analyzed within the framework of the variable-coefficient Korteweg-de Vries equation. The characteristic wave height varies with depth according to Green's law, and this follows rigorously from the theoretical model. The skewness and kurtosis are computed, and it is shown that they increase when the depth decreases, and simultaneously the wave state deviates from the Gaussian. The probability of large-amplitude (rogue) waves increases within the transition zone. The characteristics of this process depend on the wave steepness, which is characterized in terms of the Ursell parameter. The results obtained show that the number of rogue waves may deviate significantly from the value expected for a flat bottom of a given depth. If the random wave field is represented as a soliton gas, the probabilities of soliton amplitudes increase to a high-amplitude range and the number of large-amplitude (rogue) solitons increases when the water shallows.

Nonlinear random wave field in shallow water: variable Korteweg-de Vries framework

We address the most general periodic travelling wave of the modified Korteweg–de Vries (mKdV) equation written as a rational function of Jacobian elliptic functions. By applying an algebraic method which relates the periodic travelling waves and the squared periodic eigenfunctions of the Lax operators, we characterize explicitly the location of eigenvalues in the periodic spectral problem away from the imaginary axis. We show that Darboux transformations with the periodic eigenfunctions remain in the class of the same periodic travelling waves of the mKdV equation. In a general setting, there exist three symmetric pairs of simple eigenvalues away from the imaginary axis, and we give a new representation of the second non-periodic solution to the Lax equations for the same eigenvalues. We show that Darboux transformations with the non-periodic solutions to the Lax equations produce rogue waves on the periodic background, which are either brought from infinity by propagating algebraic solitons or formed in a finite region of the time-space plane.

Nonlinear dynamics of a soliton gas: Modified Korteweg–de Vries equation framework

Rogue waves are unexpectedly large and localized displacements from an equilibrium position or an otherwise calm background. For the nonlinear Schrodinger (NLS) model widely used in fluid mechanics and optics, these waves can occur only when dispersion and nonlinearity are of the same sign, a regime of modulation instability. For coupled NLS equations, rogue waves will arise even if dispersion and nonlinearity are of opposite signs in each component as new regimes of modulation instability will appear in the coupled system. The same phenomenon will be demonstrated here for a coupled “AB” system, a wave-current interaction model describing baroclinic instability processes in geophysical flows. Indeed, the onset of modulation instability correlates precisely with the existence criterion for rogue waves for this system. Transitions from “elevation” rogue waves to “depression” rogue waves are elucidated analytically. The dispersion relation as a polynomial of the fourth order may possess double pairs of complex roots, leading to multiple configurations of rogue waves for a given set of input parameters. For special parameter regimes, the dispersion relation reduces to a cubic polynomial, allowing the existence criterion for rogue waves to be computed explicitly. Numerical tests correlating modulation instability and evolution of rogue waves were conducted.

A coupled "AB" system: Rogue waves and modulation instabilities.

Rogue waves can be categorized as unexpectedly large waves, which are temporally and spatially localized. They have recently received much attention in the water wave context, and also been found in nonlinear optical fibers. In this paper, we examine the issue of whether rogue internal waves can be found in the ocean. Because large-amplitude internal waves are commonly observed in the coastal ocean, and are often modeled by weakly nonlinear long wave equations of the Korteweg-de Vries type, we focus our attention on this shallow-water context. Specifically, we examine the occurrence of rogue waves in the Gardner equation, which is an extended version of the Korteweg-de Vries equation with quadratic and cubic nonlinearity, and is commonly used for the modelling of internal solitary waves in the ocean. Importantly, we choose that version of the Gardner equation for which the coefficient of the cubic nonlinear term and the coefficient of the linear dispersive term have the same sign, as this allows for modulational instability. From numerical simulations of the evolution of a modulated narrow-band initial wave field, we identify several scenarios where rogue waves occur.
