Experimental study of OFDM implementation utilizing GNU Radio and USRP - SDR

Today, wireless sensor technology is based on monolithic transceivers that optimize cost but have a rigid hardware architecture. In this paper, a new architecture for wireless sensors is presented. It is based on a software-defined radio concept and shows impressive adaptability to external conditions. The proposed architecture, which is called the wireless ultrasmart sensor (WUSS), enables the use of a software programmable transceiver, which can simultaneously manage multiple radio communication channels or standards. In addition, the WUSS architecture can mix the flexible communication part of the smart device with the sensor conditioning part. This combination represents a new generation of general-purpose sensors for microwave measurements in the gigahertz range (e.g., displacement and position sensing) with enhanced versatility since the same radio-frequency front end is both used to communicate and make measurements. Experimental results demonstrate the feasibility of the proposed architecture. A prototype shows the following abilities: managing multiple protocols using a single antenna, interfacing standard sensors, making delay and phase measurements with a standard deviation of 3 ns, and assigning the time of arrival to incoming radio signals with an error on the order of 20 ns.

New Architecture for a Wireless Smart Sensor Based on a Software-Defined Radio

New techniques in cross-layer wireless networks are building demand for ubiquitous channel sounding, that is, the capability to measure channel impulse response (CIR) with any standard wireless network and node. Towards that goal, we present a software-defined IEEE 802.11b receiver and CIR measurement system with little additional computational complexity compared to 802.11b reception alone. The system implementation, using the universal software radio peripheral (USRP) and GNU Radio, is described and compared to previous work. We validate the CIR measurement system and present the results of a measurement campaign which measures millions of CIRs between WiFi access points and a mobile receiver in urban and suburban areas.

We present the details of a portable, powerful, and flexible software-defined radio development platform called the Kansas University Agile Radio (KUAR). The primary purpose of the KUAR is to enable advanced research in the areas of wireless radio networks, dynamic spectrum access, and cognitive radios. We describe the KUAR hardware implementation and software architecture and present example application of the KUAR to modulation, spectrum measurement, channel estimation, and rapid configuration and adaptation. We outline research directions enabled by the KUAR

COGNITIVE RADIOS FOR DYNAMIC SPECTRUM ACCESS - An Agile Radio for Wireless Innovation

The ADROIT project is building an open-source software-defined data radio, intended to be controlled by cognitive applications. The goal is to create a system that enables teams of radios, where each radio both has its own cognitive controls and the ability to collaborate with other radios, to create cognitive radio teams. The desire to create cognitive radio teams, and the goal of having an open-source system, requires a rich and carefully architected system that provides great flexibility (enabling cognitive applications to change the radio's behavior) and also has a clear structure (both so that others may add or enhance the software, and also so that the system can be clearly modeled for cognitive applications). What follows is a summary of the ADROIT system and the key architectural features intended to enable cognitive radio teams.

Adaptive Dynamic Radio Open-source Intelligent Team (ADROIT): Cognitively-controlled Collaboration among SDR Nodes

Software Defined Radios can provide significant benefits as backend gateways or base stations for sensor networks, which do not face the stringent resource constraints of innetwork nodes. We extended GNU Radio with two physical layer implementations of IEEE 802.15.4 and an FSK modulation, and use the Universal Software Radio Peripheral (USRP) to interoperate with the Chipcon CC1000 and CC2420 radios found on the popular Mica2, MicaZ and Telos B motes. The wideband nature of the USRP makes it feasible for a single SDR base station to simultaneously communicate on multiple independent channels, and provide network bridging across incompatible radio standards. The demo will show a software defined radio base station talking simultaniously to Mica2 and MicaZ nodes and will relay messages coming from the Mica2 to the MicaZ, and vice versa. Additionally, we will present a unified design and modeling environment for Software Defined Radio systems, which aims to bridge the diverse set of design abstractions and software tools used by engineers specializing in communication, networking, and embedded systems. Our environment extends Berkeley’s Ptolemy II, a heterogeneous modeling and simulation environment, which provides an overall framework and graphical interface. We provide a Ptolemy interface to GNU Radio for physical layer design, and the Click modular router from MIT, for network level design. This approach allows designers to work at their preferred design abstraction, while permitting integrated system modeling, access to rich libraries of existing system components, and efficient code generation for implementation on real targets.
