Chemical Routes for the Transformation of Biomass into Chemicals

The recent advances in electrocatalysis for oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) for proton exchange membrane fuel cells (PEMFCs) are thoroughly reviewed. This comprehensive Review focuses on the low- and non-platinum electrocatalysts including advanced platinum alloys, core–shell structures, palladium-based catalysts, metal oxides and chalcogenides, carbon-based non-noble metal catalysts, and metal-free catalysts. The recent development of ORR electrocatalysts with novel structures and compositions is highlighted. The understandings of the correlation between the activity and the shape, size, composition, and synthesis method are summarized. For the carbon-based materials, their performance and stability in fuel cells and comparisons with those of platinum are documented. The research directions as well as perspectives on the further development of more active and less expensive electrocatalysts are provided.

Heavy metals in soils : trace metals and metalloids in soils and their bioavailability

The characteristics of pre-edge peaks in K-edge x-ray absorption near edge structure (XANES) spectra of 3d transition metals were reviewed from viewpoints of the selection rule, coordination number, number of d-electrons, and symmetry of the coordination sphere. The contribution of the electric dipole and quadrupole transition to the peaks was discussed on the basis of the group theory, polarized spectra, and theoretical calculations. The pre-edge peak intensity for Td symmetry is larger than those for Oh symmetry for all 3d elements. The intense pre-edge peak for tetrahedral species of 3d transition metals is not due to 1s–3d transition, but transition to the p component in d–p hybridized orbital. The mixing of metal 4p orbitals with the 3d orbitals depends strongly on the coordination symmetry, and the possibility is predictable by group theory. The transition of 1s electron to d orbitals is electric quadrupole component in any of the symmetries. The d–p hybridization does not occur with regular octahedral symmetry, and the weak pre-edge peak consists of 1s–3d electric quadrupole transition. The pre-edge peak intensity for a compound with a tetrahedral center changes as a function of the number of 3d electrons regardless of the kind of element; it is maximized at d0 and gradually decreases to zero at d10. The features of pre-edge peaks in K-edge XANES spectra for 4d elements and the L1-edge for 5d elements are analogous with those for 3d elements, but the pre-edge peak is broadened due to the wide natural width of the core level. Assignment of pre‐edge peaks in K‐edge x‐ray absorption spectra of 3d transition metal compounds: electric dipole or quadrupole?

We reinvestigated the two C=C stretching modes of the five-membered rings of ET (ET = bis(ethylenedithio)tetrathiafulvalene), namely, nu(2) (in-phase mode) and nu(27) (out-of-phase mode). The frequency of the nu(27) mode of ET(+) was corrected to be approximately 1400 cm(-1), which was identified from the polarized infrared reflectance spectra of (ET)(ClO(4)), (ET)(AuBr(2)Cl(2)), and the deuterium- or (13)C-substituted compounds of (ET)(AuBr(2)Cl(2)). It was clarified from DFT calculations that the frequency of the nu(27) mode of the flat ET(0) molecule was significantly different from that of the boat-shaped ET(0) molecule. We obtained the linear relationship between the frequency and the charge on the molecule, rho, for the flat ET molecule, which was shown to be nu(27)(rho) = 1398 + 140(1 - rho) cm(-1). The frequency shift due to oxidation is remarkably larger than that reported in previous studies. The fractional charges of several ET salts in a charge-ordered state can be successfully estimated by applying this relationship. Therefore, the nu(27) mode is an efficient probe to detect rho in the charge-transfer salts of ET. Similarly, a linear relationship for the nu(2) mode was obtained as nu(2)(rho) = 1447 + 120(1 - rho). This relationship was successfully applied to the charge-poor molecule of theta-type ET salts in the charge-ordered state but could not be applied to the charge-rich molecule. This discrepancy was semiquantitatively explained by the hybridization between the nu(2) and nu(3) modes.

Examination of the charge-sensitive vibrational modes in bis(ethylenedithio)tetrathiafulvalene.

Although many researchers have reported that copper chloride is an important catalyst that generates relatively large amounts of dioxins in heat experiments involving model fly ash, details on the behavior of copper during the process are still unavailable. In this study, we used in situ XANES experiments involving one type of real fly ash, which originated from a municipal solid-waste incinerator (MSWI), and two fly ash models to investigate the behavior of copper in fly ash at temperatures that are suitable for de novo synthesis, which is the major formation route for dioxins during waste incineration and thermal processes. Cupric compounds in real fly ash and model fly ash A (CuCl2·2H2O + activated carbon (AC) + boron nitride (BN)) were reduced to cuprous compounds or elemental copper at low temperatures. The changes in the Cu XANES spectra of real fly ash were similar to those of model fly ash A and those of an oxychlorination catalyst. Dynamic Change of Copper in Fly Ash during de Novo Synthesis of Dioxins

Siliceous FSM-16 possesses acid sites to catalyze but-1-ene isomerization to produce but-2-ene (cis/trans = 1.4−1.7) at 323 K and 2,6,6- trimethylbicyclo[3.1.1]hept-2-ene (α-pinene) isomerization at 303 K. Catalytic activity was dependent upon heat treatment and reached a maximum at 673 K. The maximum acid strength was invariably H0 = −3.0 independent of the pretreatment temperatures. The acidity was much reduced by calcination at higher temperatures, but restored by water treatment at 353 K as long as the FSM-16 retained its structure.
