A method is provided for modifying an image. The method comprises displaying an image, the image comprising a portion of an object; and determining if an edge of the object is in a location within the portion. The method further comprises detecting movement, in a member direction, of an operating member with respect to the edge. The method still further comprises moving, if the edge is not in the location, the object in an object direction corresponding to the detected movement; and modifying, if the edge is in the location, the image in response to the detected movement, the modified image comprising the edge in the location.

Continuing the papers on alloys of Sc, Ti, V, Cr, Mn and Fe we review in the present paper, on the basis of the model developed by Miedema and co-workers, experimental and predicted enthalpies of formation of ordered binary intermetallic compounds of Co with arbitrary metal partners. The enthalpy effects are also reviewed for liquid Co alloys. The predicted values agree quite satisfactorily with the available experimental data for binary systems of Co with a transition metal. In the binary systems where Co is alloyed with a non-transition metal larger differences are sometimes observed. Since Co with other transition metals may often form solid solutions the enthalpy of forming solid solutions is dealt with in a concise way distinguishing between magnetic and non-magnetic matrix metals.

The Fe−Ti (Iron-Titanium) system

A simple electron band theory model of the enthalpy of formation ΔH of transition metal alloys is used to predict ΔH for 210 transition metal alloys as a function of composition. Some of the input parameters of the model namely bandwidths, atomic energy levels are allowed to vary within certain constraints to closely approximate any known value of ΔH. For this purpose experimental values of the enthalpy of formation are listed for binary transition metals alloys. The resulting predictions of the model are compared with the experimental data as well as with the calculated values from various models.

Trends in cohesive energy of transition metal alloys

An ironmaking blast furnace is a complex multiphase flow reactor involving gas, powder, liquid and solid phases. Understanding the flow behaviour of these phases is of paramount importance to the control and optimization of the process. Mathematical modelling, often coupled with physical modelling, plays an important role in this development. Yagi1) gave a comprehensive review of the early studies in this area in 1993. Significant progress has since been made, partially driven by the needs in research but mainly as a result of the rapid development of computer and computational technologies. This paper reviews these developments, covering the formulation, validation and application of mathematical models for gas–solid, gas–liquid, gas–powder and multiphase flows. The need for further developments is also discussed.

Simulation of Transport Phenomena around the Raceway Zone in the Blast Furnace with and without Pulverized Coal Injection

A new oxygen blast furnace process, which is characterized by the injection of preheating gas into the shaft, was developed For the development of the process, operation tests using an experimental blast furnace were carried out, and proved this process to be applicable as an ironmaking process Mathematical model simulations were also carried out and the process characteristics were clarified on a commercial scale, in comparison with those of a conventional hot blast furnace processThrough the analysis of the experimental blast furnace operation and the mathematical model simulations, this process was found to have the following characteristics;(1) Heating-up and reduction of burden assured throughout the furnace by means of the preheating gas injection(2) Appropriate preheating gas, in which the low fuel rate is realized, is the range of preheating gas flow rates corresponding to thermal flow ratio in the upper part of 074-090 and the range of temperatures 600-1200°C(3) The preheating gas composition has little influence on the reduction in the lower part(4) The position of preheating gas injection is adequate in the upper shaft as long as the heat transfer is secured(5) Operational fuel rate range is wide; 500 kg/t (with preheating gas)-1200 kg/t (without preheating gas)

Thermodynamic Properties of Liquid Fe-Ti Alloys by Mass-Spectrometry

PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To solve the following problem of a conventional configuration of a touch type input device performed with operation by pressing an operation face by a finger: it is necessary to adopt a structure for taking an area wherein a user touches the operation face by the finger, or a structure wherein a push switch is provided under the operation face so as to detect the pressing operation. SOLUTION: This touch type input device has: an operation part having the operation face; a position detection part outputting position information corresponding to a position on the operation face touched by the user; a depression detection part detecting that the operation face is depressed from a pattern of an acceleration change or a velocity change of the position information, and outputting depression information; and a control part performing prescribed processing based on the position information and the depression information.
