The Creative City is now a classic and has been republished many times. It is an ambitious book and a clarion call for imaginative action in running urban life. It seeks to inspire people to think, plan and act imaginatively in the city and to get an ideas factory going that turns urban innovations into reality. Its aim is to make readers feel: ‘I can do that too’ and to spread confidence that creative and innovative solutions to urban problems are feasible however bad they may seem at first sight.

Consequences of modernity in contemporary legal theory

Given the potent and pervasive nature of modern technologies, this paper lays out the complexities involved in achieving responsible design. In order to do this we will first compare an emerging policy-oriented programme of research known as RRI (Responsible Research and Innovation) with initiatives in HCI. A focus on the similarities and differences may highlight to what extent responsibility is already and successfully embedded within the concerns and practices of design and use, and what may yet need to be incorporated for responsible design. The paper then discusses the challenges of 'naturalising' the very ambitious programme of RRI within specific design activities and concerns, through the lens of four analytic concepts: reflexivity; responsiveness; inclusion; and anticipation. Finally, we make a case for a pragmatic, 'unromantic', but engaged reinterpretation of RRI for HCI.

This paper will focus in the urban territory and its social, cultural and economic dynamics, and in particular in the different manifestations of creativity that can be found here, namely in spaces in which spontaneous and diffuse forms of social innovation and creativity are emerging: Creative Places. It is in this urban context that Creative Places thrive, working as incubators of change, sustainable behaviours, bottom-up creativity and a subculture of collaboration. In this framework, Creative Places shape a Collaborative City, which in turn fosters the appearance of Creative Places. The assumption of design as a strategic instrument to operate in complex systems involving complex networks of actors and able to decode, combine and make sense of multidisciplinary knowledge; and in so doing, able to decline it into a coherent projectual, flexible and open-ended language in order to promote the diffusion of sustainable social innovations and widen their reach and impact through designing for sustainability and for radical systemic innovation.

espanolEn unas pocas decadas, la era digital llego a nuestras vidas cambiando los estilos de vida y los comportamientos sociales, obligando al mundo a repensar las experiencias diarias, incluidas las que tienen lugar en los lugares de trabajo. El nomadismo digital que facilita la movilidad y flexibilidad del trabajo satisface las exigencias de la sociedad actual y estimula el surgimiento de espacios de coworking. El diseno de muebles tambien necesita abordar las nuevas demandas del estilo de vida actual. En este contexto, el articulo pretende averiguar el papel que desempenan los muebles en dichos espacios. La investigacion se lleva a cabo mediante el estudio de una muestra aleatoria de espacios de coworking en Oporto. Se realizo una entrevista y una encuesta a los usuarios del espacio de coworking con el fin de identificar el denominador comun del mueble en aquellos lugares teniendo en cuenta la funcion ergonomica de los pares/ comodidad, materiales / sostenibilidad y flexibilidad / forma como parametros principales. El principal resultado de este estudio es atraer la atencion de los disenadores sobre la importancia del mobiliario a la hora de considerar la calidad de los espacios de coworking en sus capacidades multifuncionales en el contexto de una sociedad responsable, ecologica y sostenible. EnglishIn a few decades, the digital age came into our lives changing lifestyles and social behaviours, forcing the world to rethink daily experiences, including those taking place in the workplaces. The digital nomadism that facilitates the mobility and flexibility of work meets the requirements of today's society and stimulates the emergence of coworking spaces. Furniture design also needs to approach the new demands of current lifestyle. Within this context, the article intends to find out the role that furniture plays in such spaces. The research was carried out by studying a random sample of coworking spaces in Oporto. An interview and a survey were conducted to the coworking space users in order to identify the furniture’s common denominator in those places considering the pairs ergonomic function/comfort, materials/sustainability and flexibility/form as main parameters. The principal output of this study is to attract the attention of designers to the importance of furniture when considering the quality of coworking spaces in its multifunctional capacities in the context of a responsible, ecologic and sustainable society.

Furniture as Feature in Coworking Spaces. Spots in Oporto City as Case Study

This paper presents a service design project developed in an old milk factory in Milan. The proposal is part of a PhD research programme with the aim of developing a solution that enhances the growth and development of Creative Places for a new everyday life in urban contexts. These are places where groups of people collaboratively promote and manage a mix of creative initiatives in the fields of art and culture, economy and production, social services and urban regeneration.The project that is presented here has as its main objective to identify and develop optimal strategies for building the necessary infrastructure in which sustainable collaborative services can flourish. In particular, the project proposes to endow local authorities and communities with a strategic plan and specific tools, respectively, to orientate them in the most promising direction: that is, in the direction of becoming a network of effective laboratories of a new, sustainable, urban identity and active citizenship.

The use and democratisation of new digital technologies have given visibility to groups of people and grassroots organizations that can be considered agents of change in the transition to a more sustainable world Design plays an important role in the definition of strategies and in the development of innovative solutions to tackle some of the contemporary problems society faces This paper aims to show several projects developed over the last 5 years in the subject Design for Social Innovation at the Master in Design and the Master in Engineering and Product Design at the University of Aveiro, and its relation to the new social media and technologies By using Service Design tools to improve Social Innovations and the integration of new digital technologies, we design new and improved solutions to foster sustainable development The creation of a DESIS Lab has also allowed to develop innovative design solutions within local communities The methodology used is based on Learning-by-Doing with an important and relevant initial phase using ethnographic methods The results are showed as academic projects that can be applied and replicated in different contexts
