The criterion applies to all cases, of steady viscous flow in two dimensions and shows that if the local ' mesh Reynolds number ', based on the size of the mesh used in the solution, exceeds a certain fixed value, the numerical solution will not converge.

ON A STABILITY OF THE BURGERS VORTEX WITH RESPECT TO THREE DIMENSIONAL PERTURBATIONS (Mathematical Analysis in Fluid and Gas Dynamics)

We study the long-time behavior of localized solutions to linear or semilinear parabolic equations in the whole space $\mathbb{R}^n$, where $n \ge 2$, assuming that the diffusion matrix depends on the space variable $x$ and has a finite limit along any ray as $|x| \to \infty$. Under suitable smallness conditions in the nonlinear case, we prove convergence to a self-similar solution whose profile is entirely determined by the asymptotic diffusion matrix. Examples are given which show that the profile can be a rather general Gaussian-like function, and that the approach to the self-similar solution can be arbitrarily slow depending on the continuity and coercivity properties of the asymptotic matrix. The proof of our results relies on appropriate energy estimates for the diffusion equation in self-similar variables. The new ingredient consists in estimating not only the difference $w$ between the solution and the self-similar profile, but also an antiderivative $W$ obtained by solving a linear elliptic problem which involves $w$ as a source term. Hence, a good part of our analysis is devoted to the study of linear elliptic equations whose coefficients are homogeneous of degree zero.

Asymptotic self-similarity in diffusion equations with nonconstant radial limits at infinity

When the steady states at infinity become unstable through a pattern forming bifurcation, a travelling wave may bifurcate into a modulated front which is time-periodic in a moving frame. This scenario has been studied by B.Sandstede and A.Scheel for a class of reaction-diffusion systems on the real line. Under general assumptions, they showed that the modulated fronts exist and are spectrally stable near the bifurcation point. Here we consider a model problem for which we can prove the nonlinear stability of these solutions with respect to small localized perturbations. This result does not follow from the spectral stability, because the linearized operator around the modulated front has essential spectrum up to the imaginary axis. The analysis is illustrated by numerical simulations.

Stable transport of information near essentially unstable localized structures

We study a one-dimensional reaction-diffusion system which describes an isothermal autocatalytic chemical reaction involving both a quadratic (A + B -> 2B) and a cubic (A + 2B -> 3B) autocatalysis. The parameters of this system are the ratio D = D_B/D_A of the diffusion constants of the reactant A and the autocatalyst B, and the relative activity k of the cubic reaction. First, for all values of D > 0 and k >= 0, we prove the existence of a family of propagating fronts (or travelling waves) describing the advance of the reaction. In particular, in the quadratic case k=0, we recover the results of Billingham and Needham [BN]. Then, if D is close to 1 and k is sufficiently small, we prove using energy functionals that these propagating fronts are stable against small perturbations in exponentially weighted Sobolev spaces. This extends to our system part of the stability results which are known for the scalar Fisher equation.
