Experience and Educationis the best concise statement on education ever published by John Dewey, the man acknowledged to be the pre-eminent educational theorist of the twentieth century. Written more than two decades after Democracy and Education(Dewey's most comprehensive statement of his position in educational philosophy), this book demonstrates how Dewey reformulated his ideas as a result of his intervening experience with the progressive schools and in the light of the criticisms his theories had received. His philosophy, here expressed in its most essential, most readable form, predicates an American educational system that respects all sources of experience, on that offers a true learning situation that is both historical and social, both orderly and dynamic.

Attention to the beliefs of teachers and teacher candidates should be a focus of educational research and can inform educational practice in ways that prevailing research agendas have not and cannot. The difficulty in studying teachers’ beliefs has been caused by definitional problems, poor conceptualizations, and differing understandings of beliefs and belief structures. This article examines the meaning prominent researchers give to beliefs and how this meaning differs from that of knowledge, provides a definition of belief consistent with the best work in this area, explores the nature of belief structures as outlined by key researchers, and offers a synthesis of findings about the nature of beliefs. Este articulo examina la red de practicas que confieren inteligibilidad a la organizacion del conocimiento de las materias escolares que hace PISA. El programa PISA es tratado como un acontecimiento historico. Su estudio consiste en hacer visible los principios que ordenan y clasifican los objetos “vistos” y que actuan sobre el “conocimiento practico” de las materias escolares. La politica de PISA, a mi juicio, son los principios que rigen lo que los chicos deberian conocer, como ese conocimiento se hace posible, y el estudio de la inclusion y exclusion incorporadas en estas practicas. La primera parte analiza historicamente la transformacion de los numeros en “hechos”, una presuncion que posibilita las comparaciones de PISA. En la segunda parte, dirige la atencion a los principios de las materias escolares que ordenan y clasifican los “hechos” de las mediciones de PISA.

This chapter examines two different historical styles of reason to talk about how the traces of the past are studied. In talking about history as styles of reason, it explores the principles thatgovern the forms of historical questions, its methods and meanings of the archive, and the modes of judgments in the narratives of history. Differences discussed as styles of reason are to explore how complex movements of thought and cultural practices produce ways in which judgments are made, conclusions drawn, and the fields of existence made manageable within the field of history.

The Idea of Progress and the Legitimation of State Agendas: American Proposals for School Reform.

Educational research involves social values. It contains lines of reasoning established through discourse within a scientific community and within larger historical and cultural structures. The values affirmed in research have possible political functions. Theories and methods not only describe, but also give direction to the way that social events are to be challenged. The dispositional character of research is often ignored in discussions of social science. Yet the increasing use of research perspectives to define the events of our daily lives makes it imperative that the social values and beliefs underlying inquiry in social education be continually scrutinized.

This article explores the different reform practices as the effects of power. It focuses on educational policy and research as governing through the reasoning inscribed in the knowledge generated for action and participation. Political rationalities are inscribed in pedagogy as “a culture of redemption. Pedagogy is to save the child for society and to rescue society through the child. The saving of the child embodies norms about social/cultural progress that makes the science/scientist as the prophet. The first section examines turn of the 20th century USA practices to professionalize the teacher and redefine pedagogy. Pedagogy embodies a concept of progress that revisions the child from a religious entity beholden to God to one that embodies certain collective social norms related to political rationalities.
