The main objective of RILEM TC LHS-277 “Specifications for testing and evaluation of lime-based repair materials for historic Structures” is the revision, adaption and, when necessary proposal, of the test methods to accurately study lime-based binding systems and mixtures, such as mortars and grouts. The empiric use of the lime-based composites and the predominant employ of cement in the field of Civil Engineering have led to the widespread application of test methods developed for cement-based composites to test the former. However, the clear differences in composition and performance between modern cement binders and lime-based materials would advise to explore specific test methods for the latter. To undertake this task the previous knowledge on the mechanisms of setting and hardening of these binders must be revised, arranged and synthesized. Processes such as drying, carbonation, hydration and pozzolanic reaction may occur during the setting and hardening of lime-based mortars and competition between them cannot be underestimated. With the aim of underpinning the revision and proposal of test methods for lime-based systems, this review paper reports a comprehensive study of the mechanisms of setting and hardening of these binders, considering the variability of the composition, which includes pure air lime as well as lime with hydraulic properties, lime-cement and lime-pozzolan systems.

Fresh and hardened state properties of fiber reinforced lime-based grouts

Various types of additives have been diachronically used in historic mortars, whereas their use in lime-based grouts, used for the restoration of historic structures, is rather limited. In this study, an effort was made to investigate the performance of glass additives in grouts, consisting of lime and natural pozzolan. The additives concerned glass fibers (3 and 6 mm in length), glass beads and bubbles, added in a proportion 0.3–3% w/w of binders. Five grout compositions were manufactured and their properties at fresh and hardened states were tested. From the evaluation of the results, it was asserted that glass additives influenced the grouts’ performance in a favorable way. Their fresh state and physical properties were maintained or slightly improved, while there was a significant enhancement of the long-term mechanical characteristics of the mixes. Additionally, the adhesion capability of grouts was notably increased, which is a crucial aspect indicating their efficacy.

The Role of Glass Additives in the Properties of Lime-Based Grouts

Abstract The critical condition of detaching historical murals in the Convent of Mustair (Switzerland) prompted a series of investigations and conservation actions over the last 40 years. After percussion tests in 1984/1992, an advanced technology of time-average TV-holography has been applied in 2000 and 2005. The primary aim was to substantiate if and to which extent detaching is in progress. This case study explores characteristics and limits of traditional percussion tests and time-average TV-holography. Extensive mappings by both techniques are carried out on two different structures of wall paintings. The comparison shows that the so-called percussion test – when combined with a close experienced observation – reveals a holistic picture of the general condition of a threatened painting. Time-average TV-holography, on the other hand, yields highly accurate relative information on the spatial distribution of detached areas. Therefore, it is apt to provide an exact answer to the question if detachment is in progress or not.
