In this study, firstly the fiber metal laminates (FMLs) were fabricated by using aluminum sheets as skin layers and jute/basalt fibers with the different stacking sequences (sandwiched and intercalated structures) as core of structures. Then, the carbon nanotubes (CNTs) were dispersed into the epoxy resin for fabricating the FMLs with the proper flexural and shear properties. Also, the macro and micro-structural observations were performed to characterize failure mechanisms into these structures. The obtained results showed that the FML with the stacking sequence of jute sandwiched by the basalt fibers had the highest mechanical properties. Incorporating 0.3 wt% CNTs caused to achieve the highest flexural strength, flexural modulus and shear strength in this FML, which were 635 MPa, 54 GPa and 27.1 MPa, respectively. The tearing and plastic deformation of aluminum layers, fracturing and pulling out the basalt fibers, fracturing and crossing the cracks between the jute layers, delamination between aluminum and composite core were the characterized failure mechanisms. Also, creating the CNTs/epoxy nanocomposite adhesive agent on the interface of skin/core in the FML structures, fibrillating the jute fibers, pulling out CNTs, and adhering distinct fibers/epoxy were the characterized as influence factors on the mechanical properties.

An effective manufacturing process and high-performance composite structures are indispensable in the aerospace, automobile, and shipbuilding industries. The current study focuses on the combined effect of carbon nanotube (CNT) reinforcement and manufacturing methods such as co-curing, co-bonding, and secondary bonding (SB) on mechanical and free vibrational behavior of glass fiber reinforced plastic composite. Results affirmed that composite fabricated using co-cure manufacturing method with 1 wt% CNT loading improved the tensile strength by 22.8%, 12.7% compared to co-bonded and secondary bonded composites due to rougher surface formation over the fiber improved the adhesion between fiber and matrix. On the other hand, 0.25 wt% CNT added secondary bonded composite had the highest (398.19 MPa) flexural strength. The modal analysis asserted that 1 wt% CNT added co-cured composite beam had the higher fundamental natural frequencies while higher wt% CNT loading enhanced the damping properties owing to higher interaction among fiber and matrix. The current study exposes that mechanical properties and free vibrational characteristics can be improved by selecting the right manufacturing technique and appropriate weight fractions of CNTs. The co-cure manufacturing with 1 wt% of CNTs and SB with 0.25 wt% of CNTs provided the greatest enhancement to adhesively bonded composites' mechanical properties and dynamics characteristics.

Enhancing strength and stiffness of composite joint through co-cure technique

The co-cure technique efficiently joins composite components in wings, ailerons, skins, ribs and spars in aeronautical applications. The present study investigates the effect of through-thickness reinforcement of glass fibre reinforced polymer composite pin on shear and dynamic properties of co-cured composite joints. The experimental results exhibited that through-thickness reinforcement with 2% composite pin volume significantly improved the shear strength and elongation limit by 38.4% and 102.4% compared to unpinned joints. Furthermore, composite pin reinforcement changed the catastrophic failure of co-cured joints to progressive failure due to the tougher bridging traction of composite pins. The comparison of fractured surfaces exposed that debonding, composite pin pull-out and shear fracture of pins are the major failure mechanisms involved in enhanced shear strength and progressive failure of co-cured composite joints. The experimental modal analysis avowed that through-thickness reinforcement with 2% composite pin volume improved the fundamental natural frequency of the co-cure joints, while co-cure joint reinforced with higher volume (4%) of composite pins had higher damping value due to excessive fibre damage, which increased interaction between composite adherent and adhesive.
