A comprehensive, multidimensional, thermal-hydraulic model is developed for the analysis of shell-and-tube heat exchanges for liquid metal services. For the shellside fluid, the conservation equations of mass, momentum and energy for continuum fluids are modified using the concept of porosity, surface premeability and distributed resistance to account for the blockage effects due to the presence of heat transfer tubes, flow baffles/shrouds, the support plates, etc. On the tubeside, heat transfer tubes are connected in parallel between the inlet and outlet plenums, and tubeside flow distribution is calculated based on the plenum-to-plenum pressure difference being equal for all tubes. It is assumed that the fluid remains single-phased on the shell side and may undergo phase-change in the tube side, thereby simulating the conditions of Liquid Metal Fast Breeder Reaction (LMFBR) intermediate heat exchanges (IHX) and steam generators (SG). The analytical model predictions are compared with three sets of test data (one for IHX and two for SG) and favorable results are obtained, thus providing a limited validation of the model.

The sloshing phenomenon is predominant in partially filled tanks with fluids, which are under external excitation. Studies have been conducted by placing the vertical baffle in the fixed mass region and horizontal baffle in the variable mass region in the partially filled fluid tanks. In this study, Horivert baffles, a combination of horizontal and vertical baffles that are placed at the variable mass region of the tank were considered for the sloshing analysis. Water and air were the multiphase fluids in the fluid domain under consideration. The tanks with horivert baffle with slot configurations filled with 100 ​mm, 200 ​mm, and 300 ​mm of water were considered in this numerical study. The tank was excited with sinusoidal motion with excitation amplitude of 20 ​mm and frequency depending on the fill level of water in the tank. Numerical simulation results were validated with the outcomes of the experiment. The pressure, velocity, shear strain of water, and maximum elevation of water in the tank were the key parameters of investigation in this study. The baffled tank with slot configuration was proved to be efficient in the suppression of sloshing along with the free flow of fluid in the tank under consideration.
